Job Description

PELUM Association is a regional network of over 220 civil society organizations in 12 countries in East, Central and Southern Africa working in the area of participatory ecological land use management. The Association works to improve the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and the sustainability of farming communities, by fostering ecological land use management. Country chapters include Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Botswana, South Africa, Swaziland and Ethiopia.

Requirements

Education/qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in gender, political science, development studies, agriculture, environment, law, communications, journalism and any other relevant field.
  • A Master’s degree in related studies will be an added advantage
  • Any other academic or professional qualifications that will enhance the role including short courses in related work and project management.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in advocacy, gender and youth empowerment issues.
  • Experience in agroecology, climate change, agriculture, environmental science and community development interventions will be an added advantage.
  • Experience and skills in resource mobilization, fund raising and networks
  • Experience and skills in designing, planning implementing and reporting programmes
  • Be computer literate with the proven ability to use essential statistical software packages, particularly word, excel, power point, emails and the internet.

  • Excellent relationship management skills and experience working with people in different contexts
  • Ability to build capacity of staff and partners to deliver advocacy, gender and youth work in agroecology
  • Familiarity with local, county, national and international institutions, mechanisms and a wide range of actors across the development sector with experience of working with networks, government and/or CSOs
  • Hold excellent analytical and communication skills and must have a keen eye for details and ability to write excellent donor narrative reports.
  • Strong knowledge in research, capacity building and ICT skills
  • Self-organized with ability to manage time and tight schedules, working effectively under pressure
  • Proven ability to develop relationships with the media, other civil society organizations, and networks
  • Be willing and able to travel extensively within and outside the country

Roles and responsibilities

  • Planning, managing, and execution of PELUM-Kenya advocacy, gender and youth planned interventions, activities, events and forums with like-minded partners of PELUM-Kenya.
  • Develop and implement an annual plan and budget for advocacy work in the area of gender and youth
  • Prepare monthly reports on key project activities, issues and required action points
  • Create awareness among staff and partner communities on the rights of women, men, boys and girls, and support documentation and sharing of lessons on gender, youth and advocacy
  • Participate in relevant forums to enhance the success of the PELUM-Kenya network advocacy, gender and youth priorities
  • Establish and maintain a vibrant youth and women network and forge links with other like-minded stakeholders and partners
  • Work within project management processes ensuring timely delivery of work to meet the highest quality standards expected by PELUM Kenya
  • Make follow-ups of the action points made in meetings and workshops on gender, advocacy and youth issues
  • Keep track of the development of the issues affecting women and youth both at County, National and global levels
  • Respond appropriately to emerging relevant advocacy issues and especially those that affect women and youth.
  • Facilitating capacity building processes at national, regional and international meetings and events
  • Lead training workshops for relevant stakeholders, staff and key actors on advocacy, gender and youth related topics
  • Professionally represent PELUM Kenya in a variety of meetings and other external fora
  • Actively fundraise for advocacy, women and youth programmes
  • Developing key advocacy knowledge products such as: concept notes, conference outcome statements, call to action statements/communique, evidence briefs, advocacy briefs and reports.
  • Support any other related advocacy, gender and youth initiatives at PELUM Kenya
  • Perform other duties to strengthen the PELUM Kenya advocacy, gender and youth thematic area as may be required.
  • Any other assigned role by the management

  • Full time, three-year renewable contract
