Job Description

Created in 2012, FSD Africa is a £30 million financial sector development programme or ‘FSD’ based in Nairobi. It is funded by the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID). FSD Africa aims to reduce poverty across sub-Saharan Africa by building financial markets that are efficient, robust and inclusive.

Assistant Director, CEO’s Office

The Assistant Director will work closely with the CEO to implement FSD Africa’s new 5-year strategy, fostering synergy across the organization. Acting as a thought partner, the role involves coordinating efforts with FCDO, management, and external stakeholders, leveraging internal expertise to meet strategic objectives.

The Assistant Director will oversee tracking of results, risks, and budgets, lead special projects, and drive cross-pillar collaboration. They will support partnerships, particularly in climate finance, and contribute to fundraising and feasibility assessments of new projects. Key tasks include refining working processes, enhancing strategic alignment, and fostering key relationships, especially with FCDO. Governance responsibilities include improving information flow between the Board, Committees, and senior management, ensuring effective preparation and follow-up for meetings. The Assistant Director will uphold FSD Africa’s values of change, collaboration, and professional standards, promoting a culture of inclusivity, innovation, and engagement.

Qualifications and Education

  • Master’s degree and 11 years of experience or bachelor’s degree and 12 years of experience
  • Postgraduate qualification equivalent senior professional experience preferred
  • Qualified Project Management certification desirable
  • Excellent written and spoken English

  • Exceptional planning and organising skills with ability to drive for results
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in tandem
  • Excellent networks (including international) in Climate Finance, with a strong appreciation for
  • emerging developments in this field, such as Carbon and Nature Financing
  • Demonstrated appreciation of Financial Markets especially in Africa
  • Versatility in writing and presenting
  • A cool head working under pressure
