Job Description

Kenya Maritime Authority was set up in June 2004 as the semi-autonomous agency in charge of regulatory oversight over the Kenyan maritime industry. As the pacesetter of the Kenyan maritime industry, the Authority seeks to strengthen maritime administration in Kenya through enhancement of regulatory and institutional capacities for maritime safety and security, to foster effective implementation of international maritime conventions and other mandatory instruments on safety, security, promote maritime training, Search and Rescue, pollution prevention and the preservation of the marine environment as well as promote trade facilitation and maritime investments.

Job Purpose

Responsible for maritime assistance in search and rescue in accordance with International Conventions and national legislations relating to the search and rescue

Duties and responsibilities

  • Executing the SAR plan in cooperation with the sub- regional maritime rescue coordination centres;
  • Liaising with Kenya civil authority in search and rescue plans
  • Supervising staff in the division
  • Implementing the National Oil Spill Response contingency plan (NOSRCP)
  • Implements the International Convention for the prevention of pollution from Ships Marpol 73/78
  • Implements the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code (IMSBC Code)
  • Developing budget for the division ;
  • Evaluating Performance of staff in the division; and
  • Mentoring and coaching staff

Person Description

For appointment to this grade, an officer must:-

  • Bachelor Degree in the Maritime field such as Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering any other relevant qualifications from a recognized institution;
  • Master’s Degree in any of the following; Maritime Affairs, Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution will be an added advantage;
  • Certificate of Competency Class 1 (II/2) in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping 1978,as amended
  • Should have experience in search and rescue for a minimum period of three (3) years;
  • A Management Course lasting not less than Four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;
  • Be a member of a relevant professional body where applicable;
  • Proficiency in computer applications;
  • Demonstrated results in work performance;
  • Good communication skills,
  • Demonstrated ability to mobilize resources;
  • Proposal development skills;
  • Proficiency in Computer skills;
  • Meet the provision of Chapter Six of Constitution
