Job Description

Job Summary:

  • The Anesthesiologist job exists to monitor, evaluate, oversee, and provide a continual assessment of the patient’s care before, during, and after surgery, prepare reports, and participate in research in the area of specialization.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform comprehensive History and Physical Examinations relevant to clinical practice.
  • Rapidly form differential diagnoses in undifferentiated patients.
  • Appropriately triage patients who require urgent intervention.
  • Safely initiate management plans for the stabilization of critically unwell patients.
  • Provide continuous care to patients in Critical Care areas – including ventilated patients.
  • Perform relevant procedures required to assess and stabilize patients including, but not limited to:
  • Cardiac Ultrasound (ECHO)
  • Focused Abdominal Sonography in Trauma (FAST)
  • Assessment of IVC volume by Ultrasound
  • Arterial Blood Gas sampling and analysis
  • Central Line insertion and care (if trained in this procedure)
  • Rapid Sequence Induction and Intubation of adults and children
  • Conscious Sedation
  • Regional Analgesia (as trained)
  • Ventilator set up and continuous management of ventilated patients
  • Stabilization of open and closed fractures
  • Needle decompression and chest tube insertion (if trained in this procedure)
  • Administration of IV pressors and anti-hypertensives, as clinically indicated
  • ECG Interpretation Basic and Advanced Level
  • Work in the Cardiac Emergency / Casualty Department as the primary caregiver for undifferentiated presenting patients, when assigned to the Emergency Department.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team as the primary caregiver in the Critical Care areas of the Hospital including Cardiac Intensive Care Units, HDU Units, and the Thoracic and General Ward as needed.
  • Teach and supervise other clinicians in the areas of Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Advanced Trauma Life Support.
  • Lead and participate in ‘rapid response’ teams aimed at quick assessment and stabilization of critically unwell patients, including resuscitation.
  • Be actively involved in the ECCCO Training Program and willing to provide a lecture presentation 3-4 times yearly to the ECCCO Trainees. Provide active training and mentoring of the ECCCO Trainees at the bedside and in the clinical areas.
  • Perform any other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgical Services or his/her designate, depending on the need and urgency.
  • Promote effective interpersonal and public relations with team.
  • Display Christ-like attitude and character both on- and off-duty
  • Abide by the Tenwek Hospital moral code and Kenya Medical and Dental Council regulations.
  • Maintain familiarity with the legal implications of clinical practice and ensure that legal requirements are met.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED FROM:

  • Director of Cardiothoracic Surgical Services or his/her designate (Primary Supervisor)
  • Lead ECCCO Clinical Head, Head of Critical Care ICU, Head of Cardiac Emergency

SUPERVISION GIVEN TO:

  • Nursing staff, Patient Assistants, and Clinical teams

QUALIFICATIONS              

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  • Committed born again Christian with evidence of spiritual maturity and growth.
  • Successful completion of a Kenya Clinical Officers Council approved Basic Diploma of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, as well as an approved Internship year program or an  equivalent qualification.
  • Successful completion of the Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery
  • (Emergency Medicine and Critical Care, or ECCCO).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Two to three years of ECCCO experience.
  • Previous experience or training in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS), Advanced
  • Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
  • Previous experience or training in teaching.
