Category Manager

Role Overview:

  • The Category Manager will lead the development and execution of category strategies to drive sales growth, profitability, supplier performance, and portfolio optimization. The role focuses on strategic supplier partnerships, pricing, product development, market expansion, and operational excellence while ensuring alignment with company policies and long-term commercial objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze market data and consumer insights to identify industry trends, customer needs, and category growth opportunities
  • Conduct regular market visits to gather retailer feedback and understand evolving market dynamics
  • Develop, draft, and negotiate joint business plans with suppliers aligned with company strategy
  • Devise and execute long-term growth strategies for brands, suppliers, and product portfolios
  • Develop and implement pricing strategies for products and warehouses based on market intelligence
  • Build and maintain strategic supplier relationships to secure favorable pricing, rebates, and service quality
  • Collaborate with Sales, Marketing, Finance, Marketplace, and Planning teams to execute product strategies
  • Manage product portfolios, including performance tracking and exit strategies for underperforming products
  • Ensure accurate tracking, recording, and collection of supplier rebates, credit notes, and pricing adjustments
  • Monitor short expiry products and implement liquidation plans to minimize losses
  • Lead category initiatives, product launches, and promotional activities

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Supply Chain Management, Economics, Marketing, or a related field.
  • 8+years of relevant experience in category management, procurement, merchandising, or supply chain operations
  • Strong communication, analytical and data interpretation skills.
  • Basic negotiation and commercial awareness skills.
  • Pricing strategy and portfolio management
  • Good organizational and stakeholder coordination abilities.
  • Proficiency in Excel and reporting tools.
  • Strong understanding of the Kenyan retail and e-commerce market
  • CIPS membership is an added advantage
