Job Description

Integrated Approach When a family in Lwala, Kenya, is affected by a HEALTH CHALLENGE, like HIV, they are simultaneously impacted by FINANCIAL INSTABILITY and EDUCATIONAL BARRIERS.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Co-CEOs, the Chief Finance Officer will be responsible for leading Lwala Community Alliance’s wider financial strategy as we look to implement our ambitious 2028 strategy, which will entail raising $90m over this 5 year period. To support the organization in reaching these goals, the CFO will set and execute Lwala’s wider finance strategy, thinking beyond accounting and internal controls, whilst working closely with the executive team to develop the organization’s financial strategies and policy. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing new systems and efficiencies, forecasting and modeling, unit costing and ROI on our program investments.

The CFO will play a pivotal role in driving the strategic direction of the organization, fostering partnerships to achieve sustainable community development across our health programs throughout Kenya.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Planning and Strategy

  • Partner with the Co-CEOs to develop and implement a comprehensive financial strategy aligned with Lwala’s 2028 strategy.
  • Provide thought leadership to the co-CEOs, Board of Directors, and funding partners regarding financial decisions and planning.
  • Overseeallaspects of financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and management of a non-profit budget.
  • Provideanalytical review, analysis and commentary of the monthly actual results versus the budget/forecast in monthly financial reporting and  quarterly board package.
  • Build and improve systems for tracking spending against budget, and for tracking spending against restricted grant funding. Design and create tools to help each department track their own spending, and to support the development department identify funding gaps to close
  • Directly support the Co-CEOs and the development team on fundraising initiatives and engage with potential donors and fundraising partners.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and reporting requirements in Kenya and the United States.
  • Oversee annual audits for Kenya and US entities ensuring compliance, requirements are met, and audit recommendations are implemented.
  • Overseeautomation of business processes in the organization and successful implementation of the ERP bringing on board additional modules that will ensure end-to-end business process automation.

Operations

  • Overseeteamsinoperations and procurement that work collaboratively with the finance team to ensure that all back-end support functions are efficient and effectively support organizational business.
  • Ensuring that field teams are adequately supported and program needs fulfilled.
  • Drive operational best practices by standardizing all policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) within the organization.
  • Manag erelations and service delivery compliance with any third parties to which functions have been outsourced/ contracted.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the finance and operations department.
  • Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to build strong relationships that enhance the financial and operational health and sustainability of the organization.
  • Responsible for a successful annual audit.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Aminimum of 15 years of senior-level experience in strategic financial management, preferably having held a senior financial position.
  • Previous experience working in the field of community health, public health or international development.
  • Proven track record of displaying a deep understanding of nonprofit finance and delivering programs in East Africa.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, managing diverse and remote teams with the ability to become a trusted advisor and thought partner to the executive team.
  • Master’sdegree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, with a results-oriented approach.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Knowledgeandunderstanding of relevant regulatory frameworks in Kenya and the United States.
