Job Description

A kiosk is an informal convenience store selling everyday household items. Known locally by their vernacular names e.g. Duka in Kenya, Spaza in South Africa, Kantemba in Zambia. kiosk-type retail outlets are the cornerstone of African retail, accounting for over 60% of all retail trade flows. Despite their importance, kiosk-type retail outlets face significant challenges, including high cost of stock and unreliable delivery. Our digital ordering and delivery platform – Kyosk, ensures that these retail outlets get access to stock at competitive prices and have them delivered directly to them. FMCGs find the traditional distribution chain to be inadequate as well, making it expensive for them to serve kiosk-type retail outlets, leading to high incidences of product stock-outs and lost sales opportunities. By providing FMCGs with good data visibility, we solve this major problem of theirs.

About the role: 

We are seeking a commercially aware, passionate, and experienced professional to hold the Commercial Manager role. You will oversee our commercial and revenue-generating activities. The role will involve a lot of creative strategizing and implementation including the commercial strategy which you will develop and lead the implementation in accordance with the business requirements. He/she will take responsibility for the business’ financial performance and profitability in line with the strategy and business objectives.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategy Execution: Develop and implement commercial strategies for the business plan and targets based on market research and an understanding of the needs of our current and potential customers. Participate in management meetings
  • Budget Management: Prepare, present, and monitor the commercial budget in line with the business’ commercial objectives.
  • Commercial Execution: Drive an understanding the business value drivers and identifying profitable commercial opportunities to grow revenue, market share and achievement of return on Investment. Act as the champion of all things commercial in the company and warrant full compliance with company commercial procedures and corporate governance requirements.
    • Develop and maintain an excellent understanding of the key customers/target audience (small holder farmers/agro-dealers) to ensure that their needs are being met and that their business is retained.
    • Drive various customer activities to identify their future needs and requirements and initiate business alignment.
  • Performance Management: Monitor the performance of commercial activities using key metrics and prepare reports for the management team. Create an open culture with collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams and significant stakeholders. Oversee the attraction of good talent to work within the commercial department, while developing and retaining talent. Ensure that appropriate performance management and succession planning is in place to guide and motivate a diverse team of high performing individuals to achieve our aggressive business growth goals.
  • Operational Excellence: Liaise with the Operations Manager to ensure our supply chain functions operate optionally with minimal stock-outs and while optimizing the amount of inventory we hold.
  • Risk Management: Direct all activities geared towards the identification of potential risks to the business relating to new commercial opportunities and devise the appropriate mitigative actions.
  • Reporting: Collate and analyze business data pertaining to all commercial activities and use this data to prepare key reports for the management team. Lead the presentation of the key findings from the prepared reports; ensure that there is appropriate and accurate management information available to the management to guide decision making.
  • Any other duties within the Commercial department as may be assigned from time to time by the General Manager – uLima

Minimum Requirements: 

  • At least five (5) years of experience across the agricultural sales, supply chain management, distribution and retail of agricultural products with at least two (2) years in a leadership role or a similar capacity.
  • Strong experience in managing large teams of people across projects &/or business units.
  • Strong local knowledge of the market, a deep understanding of consumers and a strong commercial acumen.
  • Entrepreneurial leader with great people management and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with a demonstrable ability to capture and communicate projections as well as to model out various scenarios using Excel.
  • A hands-on, empathetic, and results-oriented approach to leadership and people management; and a ‘no-excuses’, ‘just do it’ approach to getting things done.
  • High level of integrity & confidentiality.
  • A self-motivated individual with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Highly adaptable and down to earth to work with various levels of people across the organization.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with tight timelines.
  • Comfortable with mobile & Cloud based applications
