Job Description

The World Resources Institute is a global research non-profit organization that was established in 1982 with funding from the MacArthur Foundation under the leadership of James Gustave Speth. WRI

Job Highlight:     

Reporting to Climate Program Communications Director, you will provide communication leadership and guidance for projects aimed at advancing bold climate action by countries around the world including through the UN climate negotiations. Your work will involve advancing two major communications campaigns in 2024: urging countries to submit ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and encouraging countries to coalesce around a new global climate goal at the COP29 climate summit that meets the needs of developing nations. You will also develop and execute a communications strategy for the Allied for Climate Transformation by 2025 (ACT2025) consortium which aims to ensure that voices from climate-vulnerable countries are heard and mobilized in climate negotiations. Working with our team of climate experts, you will plan and execute ambitious, comprehensive communication strategies to influence national government policy decisions, use WRI publication launches and campaigns to reach key audiences, and determine how to use external moments to advance our climate objectives. Responsibilities include overseeing messaging, event planning, social media coordination, media relations, and other outreach activities. You will coordinate and lead on high-level events with global leaders, and collaborate with colleagues at leading environmental organizations and UN agencies. You will work with researchers and other communication experts within WRI and collaborate with communication experts at partner organizations.

What will you do:    

Communications Strategy (30%):    

  • Oversee programmatic communications for WRI’s international climate action team
  • Plan and lead communications for the Allied for Climate Transformation by 2025 (ACT2025) consortium to drive greater climate ambition at COP29 that meets the needs of climate-vulnerable countries
  • Develop and carry out engaging and strategic communications strategies and campaigns around enhancing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and adopting a new global finance goal at COP29

Communications Outreach (70%):-    

  • Develop key messages, talking points, and communication materials to support programmatic initiatives and advocacy efforts
  • Manage high-level events and speaking engagements
  • Lead on communication materials, including op-eds, blog posts, media advisories, email blasts and more
  • Support media engagement in coordination with the media team
  • Contribute to the management of the Climate Program’s online presence, including website content, social media, and email marketing
  • Work with program, research and other communication teams to produce materials and products to advance goals of WRI’s Climate Program
  • Support the Climate Program’s strategy to advance climate action at the UN’s Climate Summit COP29
  • Collaborate with WRI’s core communication team on media, social media, web, design, and more
  • Track and evaluate metrics of success, and adapt strategies to grow and improve outreach results

What will you need:    

  • Education: You have completed a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, environmental studies, or related field
  • Experience: You have a minimum 7 years of relevant full-time work experience in communications, public relations, or related roles, with a focus on climate, sustainability, or environmental issues
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with an experience of producing persuasive and impactful content
  • Experience developing and implementing successful communication strategies and/or advocacy campaigns.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of international climate policy and/or other international environmental issues
  • Demonstrated expertise in orchestrating campaigns focused on influencing policymakers and negotiators
  • Languages: Proficient in written and spoken English Requirements
  • Requirements: Existing work authorization is required where this position. WRI is unable to authorize visa work authorization
