Job Description

Long-term research by GCF and partners has clearly identified four distinct species of giraffe in Africa – Masai, Southern, Northern and Reticulated giraffe, with several subspecies. All four giraffe species and their subspecies live in geographically distinct areas throughout Africa and there are only a total of approx. 117,000 giraffe remaining in the wild. While some of these species have been reported to hybridise in zoos, there is very little evidence that this occurs readily in the wild. The four species concept is based on a long-term effort, spearheaded by GCF in collaboration with Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) in Germany and other partners, to unravel the mystery of giraffe genetics and taxonomy. GCF and partners have collected over 1,000 DNA samples from all major giraffe populations across Africa. These new findings will be invaluable in informing future giraffe conservation throughout Africa.

About Job

We are seeking a dynamic science-minded individual to join our small and vibrant international team to coordinate the conservation science efforts of GCF. This newly created position of Conservation Science Coordinator will include a combination of office and field-based activities with regular local, regional and international travel. The position offers a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about species conservation and management, and has excellent well-rounded field, science, analytical, writing and communication skills. We are looking for a highly self-motivated person with a sound conservation and science background who can work independently with limited supervision. The position requires a combination of good field experience, people skills to enable working with stakeholders at all levels and a scientific mindset.

The main objectives of the position are:

  • As part of the GCF team and working with partners from government, NGOs, academia and other institutions, support and increase giraffe conservation throughout their range in Africa with a focus on Southern Africa.
  • Drive the newly created giraffe conservation science network established collaboratively with the Smithsonian Institute for Conservation Biology, San Diego Zoo Global and Senckenberg Museum, and many other international partners.
  • Implement the newly established partnerships with various government wildlife authorities and coordinate/support giraffe conservation efforts in these countries.
  • Coordinate the conservation science side of GCF’s broader work and support its implementation across Africa with its team and partners.

The position is only open for residents or citizens of a Southern African country and this will dictate where the position will be based in the region.

The position is initially available for a fixed term of two-year with the potential for extension depending on funding availability and success of the programme.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in science/conservation from a recognised university.
  • Minimum five years of experience in field conservation science and research.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, including publishable track record.
  • Strong experience in report writing, project management and fundraising.
  • Experience in an array of statistical software packages and GIS mapping.
  • Ability to carry out work under potentially challenging conditions and minimal supervision.
  • Excellent leadership, diplomatic and interpersonal skills, including ability to present to an array of local and international audiences and represent GCF to a wider audience.
  • Excellent knowledge of and commitment to wildlife conservation in Africa.
  • Meticulous approach to work and ability to produce quality outputs in a timely manner.
  • Resident/citizen of a Southern African country preferable.
  • Drivers licence and good 4×4 experience.

Remuneration

  • The position is full-time. Depending on skills, experience and availability, the position will offer a competitive remuneration package commensurate up to US$54,000 p.a. (or equivalent).
