Job Description

Trees for the Future (TREES) has a solution to some of the world’s most pressing challenges – the Forest Garden Approach – but as we continue to work closely with farmers on the ground we are constantly discovering ways to increase our impact.

County Trainer

THE ROLE 

The County Trainer will work with the Training and Technical teams to ensure Program staff have the knowledge and competencies needed to train and mentor farmers in TREES Forest Garden Approach. The Country Trainer provides expertise in regenerative agriculture and agroforestry practices as well as in training, facilitation and extension work. This role requires significant time traveling and working in the field. This role reports to the Country Trainer.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Contribute to the development of county-level training program plans and budgets.
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate trainings (e.g. training of trainers, refresher trainings, seed collector training, etc.) to staff, partners, farmers, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Observe training events to evaluate technicians’ facilitation skills, technical knowledge, and understanding of the Forest Garden Approach; document evaluation feedback, develop plans, and follow up as needed to build technician capacity in training and extension.
  • Facilitate the roll-out and management of initiatives led by the training and technical team in the field.
  • Visit farmers and Forest Garden sites regularly to monitor project implementation, observe technical quality, verify accuracy of data collected, and identify and propose initiatives that will enhance farmer adoption and quality of Forest Gardens.
  • Visit project farmers and forest gardens as needed to observe forest garden establishment and practices, learn from farmers and document innovations and good practices, identify common challenges faced by farmers, and identify solutions (e.g. through establishing experiments to test potential solutions, or disseminating known solutions).
  • Contribute to the development and roll-out/adoption of high-quality technical materials by technicians and farmers
  • Oversee or provide support as needed to ensure the effective management of training sites, central nurseries, and other elements of the program.
  • Produce data for Monitoring Evaluation and Learning (MEL) reports, presentations, communications, and other informational needs as requested.

  • A proactive field implementer. You regularly visit farmer sites, monitor project activities, and provide solutions to improve Forest Garden establishment and management.
  • An innovative problem solver. You identify common challenges, test solutions, and document best practices to enhance farmer adoption and project impact.
  • A meticulous data collector and reporter. You ensure accurate data collection for MEL reports, presentations, and program communications.
  • A collaborative team player. You work seamlessly with training teams, technical staff, and partners to ensure successful program execution.
  • An effective communicator. You document key learnings, share insights with stakeholders, and contribute to program improvements through clear and concise reporting.

REQUIREMENTS 

  • University Degree in a relevant field, e.g. General Agriculture, Agroforestry, forestry, Environmental Science, Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Education and Extension, Natural Resource Management or any other relevant Qualification.
  • At least three (3) years’ working experience in agroforestry or agriculture, or environmental sustainability.
  • Demonstrated communication and training facilitation skills.
  • Working proficiency in MS applications, especially Word, Excel and powerpoint and ability to navigate smartphone applications.
  • A valid motorcycle license with experience in riding both on and off-road and a history of safe motorcycle operation.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and preferably the local language(s)
  • Ability and interest to study, understand, apply, and continuously learn about all aspects of Forest Gardens.
