Deputy Lead – Imports

Job Purpose

Our client is looking for a detail-oriented and experienced Deputy Lead – Imports to oversee the end-to-end importation process. This role ensures smooth and compliant customs clearance while keeping everything on track with regulatory requirements. You’ll be responsible for handling import documentation, coordinating with clearing and forwarding agents, and navigating customs platforms like the Integrated Customs Management System (ICMS). Prior experience in a clearing house is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Import Documentation & Compliance

  • Manage and verify all import documents, including Bills of Lading, Commercial Invoices, Packing Lists, Import Declarations, Certificates of Origin, and Permits.
  • Ensure all imports comply with customs regulations, port authorities, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Use ICMS for customs declarations, import tracking, and clearance processing.
  • Liaise with government agencies like KRA, KEBS, TRA, and other customs authorities to secure approvals and maintain compliance.
  • Stay updated on import duty structures, HS codes, trade agreements, and exemptions.

Clearing & Forwarding Operations

  • Work closely with clearing agents to ensure timely customs clearance and smooth delivery of goods.
  • Oversee customs duty assessments, tariff classifications, and dispute resolutions.
  • Handle valuation queries, exemptions, and bonded warehouse documentation.
  • Ensure proper costing of imported goods, including duties, taxes, and freight charges.

Reporting & Process Improvement

  • Prepare reports on import costs, clearance timelines, and regulatory changes.
  • Identify ways to reduce costs and improve efficiency in the import process.
  • Maintain accurate records for audits and compliance reviews.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in importation, customs clearance, and logistics.
  • Hands-on experience in a clearing house is a must.
  • Strong knowledge of ICMS (proficiency in customs declar​ations, tracking, and compliance).
  • Expertise in duty exemptions, import licenses, and bonded warehouse operations.
