Deputy Safety Manager

Role Profile

The Deputy Safety Manager supports the Safety Manager in planning, implementing, and maintaining the organization’s Safety Management System (SMS) in compliance with applicable Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) regulations, and international best practices. This role plays a critical part in risk oversight, audit participation, compliance verification, and continuous safety performance improvement.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deploy and maintain the Safety Management System (SMS) including safety programs, monitoring, audits, data analysis and investigations.
  • Participate in Safety Action Group (SAG) committees, ensuring issues are raised and addressed.
  • Conduct hazard identification, risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Lead and support safety audits and inspections, and track corrective actions to closure.
  • Conduct incident/accident investigations, root‑cause analysis and improvement recommendations.
  • Monitor safety performance indicators, prepare safety reports, and drive a data‑based safety culture.
  • Deliver safety training and awareness programs, promoting organization‑wide SMS engagement.
  • Manage safety documentation and execute management of change (MOC) processes to ensure currency and compliance.
  • Liaise with KCAA, airlines and partners, supporting regulatory interface and preparedness for external audits.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in aviation safety, including hands‑on experience in legislation, SMS implementation, risk assessments and investigations.
  • Academic background in Aviation Safety, Aeronautical Engineering, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Aviation Management, Occupational Safety & Health, or equivalent.
  • Completed a Safety Management Systems Course recognized by the Authority.
  • Prior involvement with internal/external safety audits and corrective action implementation.
  • Experience managing safety programmes in multi‑disciplinary operational environments (flight ops, ground ops, engineering, cargo, training).
  • Ability to lead safety initiatives, committees, and foster a proactive safety culture.
