Job Description

The Commission dates back to 1954 when Civil Service Commission was established by British Colonial Government following Holmes Commission Report, 1948; Civil Service Commission was advisory to the Governor in matters of appointments; At independence in 1963 it was enshrined in the constitution and renamed Public Service Commission; Independence Constitut.

Director – Wildlife Policy and Strategy

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:- 

  • Served for a minimum period of three (3) years at the grade of  Deputy Director of Wildlife, CSG 6 or in a comparable and in  relevant position in the wider public ser-vice;
  • A Bachelors Degree in any of the following disciplines:- Environmental Science, Envi-ronmental Conservation and Natural Resource Management, Environmental Con-servation, Environmental Resource  Conservation, Environmental Education, Envi-ronmental Management and Conservation, Environmental Studies and Community Development, Environmental Studies and Community Resource  Conservation ,Bio Resource  Conservation and Management, Botany, Climate Change and Develop-ment, Forestry, Coastal and Marine Resource Management, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Marine Resource Management, Natural  Resource Management, Wildlife Management, Zoology or its equivalent and relevant qualification from a university recognized in Kenya ;
  • A Masters Degree in any of the following disciplines:- Environmental Economics, En-vironmental Science, Forest Survey For Sustainable Development, Forestry, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Governance, Environmental Policy, Envi-ronmental Planning And Management/Studies/Agroforestry, Resource Management, Agriculture Economics, Land And Water Management, Biodiversity Conservation ,Wildlife Conservation ;Range Management, Climate Change, Sustainable Develop-ment or its equivalent and relevant qualification from a university recognized in Kenya;
  • Demonstrated managerial, administrative and professional competence in work per-formance and exhibited a thorough understanding of national goals, policies, objec-tives and ability to relate them to proper management of environment and natural resource function.

Duties and Responsibilities 
The overall function of the Director, Wildlife Policy and Strategy is to provide coordination and oversight in the review, formulation and implementation of the wildlife research, assessment, monitoring and training policy, strategy and legislation in the directorate. Duties and responsibilities at this level will include:-

  • Initiating the formulation and implementation of wildlife conservation policy;
  • Coordinating wildlife regional protocols, conservation conventions and interna-tional agreements in liaison with other stakeholders;
  • Developing feedback mechanisms to monitor wildlife conservation programmes;
  • Coordinating development of wildlife research reports;
  • Coordinating and harmonizing wildlife conservation, research and technology transfer;
  • Undertaking wildlife conservation research in liaison with other stakeholders;
  • Coordinating wildlife conservation matters between the national and county gov-ernments;
  • Overseeing training and capacity building to support national and international wildlife conservation programs;
  • Mobilizing funds and other resources for the wildlife sector;
  • Ensuring sustainable exploitation ,utilization of wildlife and wildlife products;
  • Developing and enhancing capacity building and physical infrastructure for wildlife and wildlife resource management;
  • Enforcing standards ,rules and regulations on conservation management and pro-tection of natural resources;
  • Coordinating the development and review of wildlife policies and legislation and monitoring implementation;
  • Coordinating the implementation of national wildlife conservation and manage-ment strategies;
  • Coordinating monitoring implementation of wildlife policies, guidelines and pro-posals on adaptation and mitigation measures at the national and international levels;
  • Formulating ,interpreting and monitoring wildlife conservancy strategic policies;
  • Reviewing the procedures and processes for granting concessions, licenses and per-mits in liaison with other stakeholders;
