Job Description

Embu County Profile Embu County Government headed by H.E Governor Martin Wambora is one of the 47 counties in Kenya which came into operation after the March 4 2013 General Election. As an entity exercising constitutional authority, it is responsible for county legislation (outlined in article 185 of the Constitution of Kenya), executive functions (outlined in article 183), functions outlined in the fourth schedule of the constitution of Kenya, functions transferred from the national government through article 187 of the constitution of Kenya, functions agreed upon with other counties under article 189(2) of the constitution of Kenya, and establishment and staffing of a public service (under article 235 of the Constitution of Kenya).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Driving/operating the fire engine as authorized.
  • Making routine daily checks and inspections of the fire engines to ensure it is in sound mechanical condition.
  • Ensuring general routine maintenance of the fire engine and equipment in line with the manufacturer’s manual/specifications.
  • Reporting any malfunctioning of the vehicle/fire engine systems.
  • Ensuring security and safety for the fire engine on and off the road.
  • Maintenance of work tickets for vehiclé/fire engine assigned.
  • Responding to fire and emergency calls to prevent and/or minimize loss of life, property, or injury.
  • Safely and efficiently driving the fire engine to the scene of fire in response to an emergency.
  • Operating the fire engine pumps and other fire/rescue apparatus safely and efficiently.
  • Performing any other duty as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements for Appointment

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Mean grade D Plain or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • A valid driving license free from any current endorsement(s)  for all class(es) of vehicle(s) an officer is required to drive
  • Attended a First Aid Certificate Course lasting not less than one (1) week at St. John Ambulance or Kenya Institute of Highway and Building Technology (KIHBT) or any other recognized institution.
  • Passed Suitability Test for Driver Grade III.
  • Passed Practical Test for Drivers conducted by the respective department.
  • Be physically and medically fit as certified by a Government Doctor.
  • A valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Kenya Police.
  • At least two (2) years driving experience.
  • Have a minimum of two (2) years of proven experience in fire engine/firefighting equipment operation.
  • Demonstrate experience in managing disasters.
  • Possession of a Grade III certificate and above in vehicle mechanics/maintenance will be an added advantage.
