Mission Statement for the Role:

To own the end to end technical and operational delivery of the company’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) plan. Ensure that ESG is well documented and engrained in our everyday business.

Key SMART Results for A-Player Success – Target, Year 1

  • Understand current state of ESG within the organization and develop roadmap to improve ESG within the company- End of Q2 2024
  • Own, manage and execute the ESG action plan – End of Q2 2024
  • Monitor ESMS, and ensure compliance with laws and regulations and industry best practice and drive communication, training, and implementation of ESMS across the company in all operational areas – Ongoing
  • Provide quarterly progress report on ESG to all stakeholders, ensure that we meet deadlines – Ongoing
  • Foster a culture within the company where the importance of ESG is embraced, and reflected in daily activities- Ongoing
  • Balance all impact with company’s strategy and commercial objectives – Ongoing
  • Measure and report on / quantify ESG to management, board, shareholders – Ongoing
  • Own all matters ESG across all stakeholders, both internal as well as external – Ongoing
  • Secure grants for ESG Initiatives – Ongoing
  • Monitor E&S risks and develop appropriate strategies to address the risks and ensure implementation – Ongoing

Level of Management Experience required (Mandatory & Nice to Have)

  • Mandatory – Senior experience in ESG domain ownership.

Department stage of development where this role sits (starting, preparing for scale, scaling, maturing)

  • Preparing for scale.

Key Competencies – Criticality (H, M ,L)

  • Owned and delivered ESG plan, ideally in high tech/fast moving environment – H
  • Held budgetary responsibility for end to end ESG function – H
  • Solid understanding of IFC PS 1-6, BIA, GIIRS and able to navigate through the complex landscape to determine best fit for stage and sector of company – H
  • Working knowledge in ESMS and knowledge in Carbon Footprint Reduction, Responsible Investing, Environmental Discharges, EHS Auditing Techniques etc. – H
  • Possess strong analytical, evaluation design, and methodological skills, and utilizes “right-fit” methods for a broad range of quantitative and qualitative approaches – M
  • Strong network in the ‘for good’ development space – M
  • Experience undertaking audits and ensuring data protection compliance – M
  • Ability to facilitate the process of turning ESG data into meaningful stories for the organization – M
  • Ability to draft narrative content for sustainability reports, trends reports, and other communications – M

Mandatory criteria with no exceptions to hire:

  • Must have operated in a business with similar Values and DNA to Poa to ensure cultural alignment.
  • Must have supported mid/large organizations in East Africa with the implementation of their ESG plan.
  • Must have worked with a multi cultural leadership team.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills, with a keen ability to synthesize and present complex data in a simple, compelling, meaningful way (ability to produce beautiful and top-notch data visualization is a plus).
  • Experience in owning ESG domain and associated standards.
  • Numerate, project management experience and self starter / able to work without close supervision.
  • The role is Africa- based and requires field trips to Kenya and other future operations.
