Job Description

The Aga Khan Academy Nairobi is operated by Aga Khan Education Service Kenya (AKESK), a non-profit organization, with close to a hundred years’ experience operating schools in Kenya. Our first formal schools were opened in 1918, and AKESK currently operates 11 schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret, serving close to 5,000 students with a quality, affordable education.

The position

The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKES, Kenya) operates 5 schools in various cities in Kenya and provides nursery to senior secondary education in both national and international curricula. It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.

The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi (AKA, Nairobi) is an IB continuum school in Kenya authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum (IB) from Early Years through to Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). With over 1000 students, AKA, Nairobi is a multi-cultural school with a variety of nationalities represented in our student and teaching faculty.

The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi – Junior School has an opening for the position of PYP Homeroom Teacher starting April 2024.

Role Summary

A PYP Homeroom Teacher is an informed, reflective practitioner who uses inquiry-based learning and teaching strategies to create a positive learning environment that motivates and challenges all learners to develop attributes of the IB Learner Profile to become independent, life-long learners and leaders.

The PYP Homeroom Teacher will ensure student success and provide for the individual learning needs of each learner. He/she will be responsible for creating an inquiry-based classroom and teaching within the IB’s Primary Years Programme (PYP) philosophy.

The requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education/Bachelor’s degree with PGCE
  • 5 years of teaching experience in an international school
  • PYP-focused professional development
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multicultural collaborative team and environment
  • Be conversant with the use of technology as a teaching and learning tool
  • Teachers Service Commission (TSC) registration certificate
  • Certificate of good conduct.

In addition to the above, experience with any of the following will be an added advantage:

  • Sports Science
  • Performance and Visual Arts
  • Technology integration
  • Modern European languages
  • Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics (STEAM)
  • Experience in Special Education Needs
