Job Description

UNFPA is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. UNFPA expands the possibilities for women and young people to lead healthy and productive lives. Since UNFPA started working in 1969, the number – and rate – of women dying from complications of pregnancy or childbirth has been halved. Families are smaller and healthier. Young people are more connected and empowered than ever before. Too many left behind But too many are still left behind. Nearly a billion people remain mired in extreme poverty. Sexual and reproductive health problems are a leading cause of death and disability for women in the developing world. Young people bear the highest risks of HIV infection and unintended pregnancy.

Job Purpose 

  • To develop a comprehensive and secure online humanitarian database, with a corresponding dashboard that is interoperable with other existing databases and is readily available to organizations involved in disaster management at both levels of government and partners in Kenya.
  • The consultants will work closely with the UNFPA and NCPD technical team  under the direct supervision of Population Data Specialist UNFPA.

Scope of Work

The consultant is expected to:

  • Design a central database with a data functionality system that ensures seamless integration of new database to the existing data.
  • Work with humanitarian and government data contributors and data consumers to identify areas of opportunities for data integration.
  • Familiarize with existing databases and systems; Check that data and metadata produced and provided by different agencies meet accuracy, consistency, and comparability requirements.
  • The consultant/firm shall make timely presentations of the database to the technical working group during the development process so that the final product is acceptable to technical working group
  • The consultant shall install the database and provide training with demonstration on the functionality of the database to the technical working group for final approval.
  • Consultancy duration : The consultant will work  for 20 days

Consultancy expected deliverables:

  • Inception report.
  • Draft database
  • Final database
  • An interactive user-friendly online database The database should have the following capabilities:
  • A secure humanitarian database system with access level controls
  • Reporting and  analysis modules with manipulation and retrieval capabilities
  • User friendly navigation
  • Data integration with other databases / Interoperable database
  • A manual  for the operationalization of the online database in humanitarian setting (hardcopy and digital formats)
  • Train administrators on database utilization and management.

 Academic Qualifications  and experience 

  • Masters in either Computer Science or Information Technology or GIS or Software Engineering from a recognized institution.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in undertaking a similar assignment in database development or web applications
  • Experience in working with population data systems.
  • Experience in database management platforms and programming languages including Hadoop and MapReduce (or other similar systems), HTML and Java among others.
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team of experts.
