Job Description

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is an international non-governmental organization supporting relief and development work in over 99 countries around the world. CRS programs assist persons on the basis of need, regardless of creed, ethnicity or nationality and works through local church and non-church partners to implement its programs. CRS has been helping poor, vulnerable families improve their lives through orphans and vulnerable children, agriculture, health, microfinance, and WASH programming in Kenya since 1965.

ROLE

In close consultation with the Nawiri County WASH Lead, County Departments of Water and Sanitation and Preventive Health (Public Health), the Nawiri Sub-County/Ward Coordinator and the Nawiri consortium partners, the Intern – Integrated Water Resources Management will learn while providing support to the implementation of planned WASHE activities. These will include:

  • Participation in Nawiri weekly activity planning.
  • Under the guidance of the Nawiri WASH lead, he/she will support in the designing, planning, monitoring and control and operations and maintenance of water supply, water treatment, flood defence structures and other water-related projects.
  • In collaboration with Caritas and County Departments of Water and Sanitation and Preventive Health (Public Health), facilitate the participatory designs and planning, joint monitoring, developing of the infrastructure operations and maintenance plans, water safety plans,
  • Participate and provide support during community level activities including household visits, community dialogues and public consultations among other activities as guided by the WASH officers.
  • Compile activity reports and field visit reports at end the of each activity using standard tools including putting together weekly progress reports.
  • Participate in team meetings including the WASHE CoP meetings as part of learnings.
  • Liaising with clients, contractors, government agencies, local authorities and suppliers to ensure effective and effective implementation of WASHE activities to comply with quality standards including SLI, CLA, EHS etc.
  • Maintaining professional relationships with project participants.
  • Any other activities assigned by the line manager.

Required/Desired Foreign Language: English and Swahili.

Travel Required: 90% of the time to targeted sub-counties of Marsabit.

Key Working Relationships: 

  • Supervision: Reports to Senior Project Officer – WASH
  • Internal: Nawiri WASH Lead, Nawiri Environmental Compliance Lead and the Marsabit County WASH Lead, Sub County Coordinators and Sub County WASH Project Officers.
  • External: Donor, Private sector actors including financial institutions, government agencies/officials, Local/international NGOs, and UN agencies operating in the project area.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Water Resources Management (Hydrology/Water Resources Management/Geology/Geography/Natural Resources Management, Environmental Planning and Management/Water and Environmental Management) from Kenyan Universities/Reputable Colleges.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to write good reports.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer aided drawing/design, modelling and monitoring, GIS and remote sensing applications.
  • Willingness to learn new things in a rapidly changing context.
  • Willingness to stay long days in remote field locations.
  • Graduates with demonstrated good character, creativity, honesty and integrity, positive attitude, and ability to learn.
  • Demonstrated Commitment to respect, equity, diversity, and inclusion including gender equality.
