Job Description

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the world’s environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Compile inputs, practical examples and experiences from Member States on practical and context-specific challenges, barriers and enabling conditions for the effective development and implementation of integrated coastal zone management.
  • This includes drafting an official letter to member states, UN agencies and relevant organizations to request their input to the report to be reviewed, signed and sent out by UNEP.
  • Review, distill and integrate relevant data and results from an ongoing survey being undertaken by UNEP, in collaboration with GRID-Arendal, to incorporate knowledge and experiences from member states and UN agencies on ICZM barriers, challenges and enabling conditions in the UNGA progress report.
  • Review achievements, best practices, reports and documentation by member states, development partners, UN agencies and other stakeholders on the implementation of the UNGA Resolution 78/159 on ICZM resolution at the national, regional and global levels.
  • Review and incorporate a summary of the analysis of policies, strategies, programmes and projects that are contributing to the UNGA Resolution 78/159, including key gaps in strengthening cooperation for integrated coastal zone management to achieve sustainable development.
  • Follow up with member states and partners to integrate their inputs and learning in the progress report and conduct an analysis of the inputs provided.
  • Based on the input, practical experiences and learning from Member States, UN Agencies, and partners prepare comprehensive and insightful draft action-oriented recommendations on how to address the context-specific challenges, barriers and enabling conditions related to the thematic topics covered in UNGA Resolution 78/159, including recommendations for enhanced cooperation for ICZM implementation at national, regional and global level to support sustainable development.
  • Draft the Action-Oriented Progress Report on the Implementation of the UNGA Resolution 78/159: Strengthening Cooperation for Integrated Coastal Zone Management closely following the formal UNGA guidance: “Procedures for Approval/Clearance of Reports of the Secretary General” (attached to ToR) and report outline provided, and submit the draft progress report to UNEP for review and presentation at Branch and Division meetings for input and feedback.
  • Prepare revised draft progress report by incorporating inputs and comments and submit to UNEP for final review.
  • Submit the final report of 8500 words including Annexes to UNEP.

Qualifications/special skills

  • A master’s degree (or higher) in environmental sciences, marine science, marine ecology or international development, with a specific academic or professional background related to integrated coastal zone management, marine ecosystem conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation and other closely related fields is required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the master’s degree.
  • At least 10 years of international-level working experience related to integrated marine and coastal ecosystem management, environmental and ecosystem assessment, monitoring and evaluation is required.
  • Demonstrated senior-level experience in technical research and environmental programmes design and management assessment or evaluation regarding on integrated coastal zone management is required.
  • Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams, including national governments, national and international organisations and local and expatriate technical experts is desirable Demonstrated experience in project development, implementation and management and monitoring and evaluation regarding integrated coastal zone management is desirable.
  • Strong analytical, reporting, and writing abilities; excellent facilitation skills; openness to change and ability to receive/integrate feedback; and ability to plan, organise, implement, and report on work.
