Job Description

The World Food Programme is the food assistance branch of the United Nations and the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and promoting food security.

Junior Consultant (Behavioral Science)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

  • The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations’ frontline agency in the fight against hunger, delivering food assistance in emergencies and collaborating with smallholder farmers, communities, and governments to improve nutrition and build resilience. In Eastern Africa, the Kenya Country Office presents an optimal opportunity to leverage innovative solutions for enhancing food assistance and resilience programs, as well as supporting capacity strengthening.
  • At the core of WFP Kenya Innovation Unit’s mission is the design, piloting, implementation, and scaling of new ideas. As one of the five quintet of change areas identified in UN 2.0, behavioral science emphasizes the importance of innovative approaches that not only address immediate needs but also foster long-term resilience.
  • The Innovation Unit is seeking to fill the position of International Junior Consultant (Behavioral Science) to support the integration of behavioral insights into program design and implementation. This role aims to enhance the effectiveness of our initiatives and empower communities to navigate challenges and thrive.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Under the direct supervision of the Senior Innovation Manager (Services) and overall supervision by the Head of Innovation, the International Junior Consultant (Behavioral Science) will:
    • Develop actionable recommendations that encourage refugees in Dadaab and Kakuma to transition from reliance on humanitarian assistance to self-reliance.
    • Provide strategic insights to optimize the fundraising approach of the innovation unit to enhance funding opportunities.
    • Formulate sustainable behavior change strategies for farmers adopting climate-smart agriculture practices.
    • Strengthen the capacity of government counterparts in behavioral science to ensure effective implementation of interventions.
    •  Assess and improve existing interventions related to aflatoxin prevention, focusing on best practices for preventing mycotoxin formation.

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT

By the end of the contract period we expect:

  • Behavioral Analysis Report: Comprehensive report detailing current behaviors and motivations of refugees, including identified barriers and facilitators.
  • Actionable Recommendations Document: Set of targeted recommendations for interventions to promote positive behavioral changes among refugees.
  • Fundraising Strategy Review Report: Evaluation of existing fundraising strategies, highlighting gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Revised Fundraising Strategy Document: Detailed document containing actionable recommendations for enhancing fundraising approaches.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

We are looking for;

  • An organizer with great attention to detail. You are a meticulous planner but are flexible enough to change course when the situation requires you to do so.
  • Driven by impact. Achieving impact through your job is important to you, and you are passionate about working towards achieving zero hunger.

Education: 

  • A degree in Behavioral Science, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Experience in behavioral analysis, particularly in humanitarian or development contexts. Familiarity with refugee issues, climate-smart agriculture, and aflatoxin prevention strategies.
  • Familiarity with the UN system is an added advantage.
