Job Description

Terre des hommes is the leading Swiss child relief agency. We are committed to improving the lives of millions of the world’s most vulnerable children. Children are the first to suffer in times of war, natural disasters and as a result of poverty

Specific Objectives of the Consultancy

The purpose of this consultancy is to:

  • Adapt the qualitative research framework and toolkit to the country’s context, ensuring participatory child-centred research methods are used
  • Organise data collection in compliance with the set quality and ethical criteria
  • Produce a country findings report

Deliverables:

  • Inception report including an updated country context analysis, research approach, framework, including ethical guidance and toolkit in English, and a data collection plan with the relevant stakeholders
  • Draft country results and findings report
  • Final country results and findings report
  • Findings presentations

Time period and Geographical area:

  • The assignment will start in May 2024 and is expected to be completed by September 2024.
  • The consultant must be based in Kenya, preferably in Nairobi, Kisumu or Kilifi (project sites).

Scope of work

Development of research framework and ethical approval – May 2024

  • Suggest and integrate relevant adjustments in the research toolkit: 3 days
  • Suggest and integrate relevant adjustments in the research toolkit: 3 days

Pilot of tools and data collection – June, July 2024

  • Submit an inception country report including an updated country context analysis, research approach, framework, including ethical guidance and toolkit in local language whenever appropriate, and a data collection plan with the relevant stakeholders i.e. target group, sampling framework, schedule and conduct data collection activities e.g. interviews/focus group discussions: 3 days
  • Pilot research toolkit and proceed to adjustments in collaboration with the child advisory group: 2 days
  • Coordinate and conduct data collection e.g. interviews and focus group discussions in compliance with quality and ethical standards: 10 days
  • Manage data following standards set in the General Data Protection Regulation: 2 days
  • Analyse data using analytical framework discussed/developed with/by the Lead: 5 days

Produce a country findings report – August 2024

  • Submit a draft country results and findings report and a summary slide presentation: 8 days
  • Conduct validation activities with research participants in collaboration with the child advisory group: 2 days
  • Submit a final country results and findings report, integrating the feedback received from TdH NL and research participants: 1 day
  • Handover all collected personal information and data to TdH NL: 1 day

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in anthropology, sociology, development studies, childhood development, international human rights law, adolescent health or education, or other relevant field.
  • At least five years of qualitative research experience, including participatory and child-centred methods
  • Previous experience with undertaking qualitative data collection and analysis on an issue related to child protection, children’s rights, violence against children
  • Understanding on issues related to Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation, including technology-facilitated CSEA
  • Excellent ability to communicate and write both in English and Kiswahili
  • Experience working with diverse workforces
  • Experience in working as part of a research team
  • Working knowledge of research ethics, including informed consent, data confidentiality, do no harm, child safeguarding etc.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and capacity to implement a research project in compliance with TdH NL’s key principles: Children at the centre, Intersectionality and power awareness, Safety and Wellbeing
