Job Description

HJFMRI was organized as a nonprofit corporation to be operated exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes. HJFMRI offers international support for programs advancing medical research and providing care, treatment and education

Responsibilities

  • HJFMRI is seeking a Lead Bioinformatician to support expert support and guidance in bioinformatics for sequences generated from a variety of applications, including whole genome, 16S amplicons, Targeted Region Sequencing, RNA-Seq, Microbiome analysis, Metagenomics and microbial detection, and single-cell RNA-Seq. The incumbent will develop data analysis pipelines on Linux, high-performance computing clusters, other local computational servers, and other available cloud computing solutions, to allow versatility in data analysis. To effectively provide the requisite support, the incumbent will have skills in statistical computing, machine learning and processing big data using programs such Python and R libraries, to allow analysis of big datasets and perform associated modelling for predictive outcomes.
  • The incumbent will mentor, as needed, graduate students (MScs and PhDs), junior investigators and management teams and will also be expected to support Basic Science Lab broaden its funding base by identifying and responding to funding opportunities.
  • Provide overarching leadership in bioinformatics
  • Provide leadership in developing data analysis pipelines to allow versatility in data analysis.
  • To take lead in big data generation, associated statistical analysis and modelling for predictive outcomes.
  • Mentor graduate students (MScs and PhDs), junior investigators and management teams.
  • Serve as a Principal or Co-Investigator on successful proposals as assigned.
  • Publish/present results to other scientists within and outside of Africa and represent WRAIR-Africa at international scientific meetings.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • PhD in Molecular Biology of Infectious Diseases with a strong focus on bioinformatics
  • Master’s degree in Molecular Biology is an added advantage.
  • At least 5 years knowledge and experience in bioinformatics (includes time spent during PhD

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to successfully lead a growing genomics and bioinformatics team.
  • Excellent organization, time, and project management skills, including excellent scientific written/ oral communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively lead and contribute to complex, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven statistical and big data analysis skills with relevant experience in infectious diseases research.
  • Possess a profound knowledge of scientific writing and the ability to convey technical information and ideas accurately and efficiently.
