Job Description

The position

The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKES, Kenya) operates 5 schools in various cities in Kenya and provides nursery to senior secondary education in both national and international curricula. It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.

The AKES, Kenya has an opening for the position of MATHS COORDINATOR to be based in Mombasa and will be required to travel to AKES, Kenya Schools countrywide.

Purpose

To work with the AKES, Kenya Head of Academics and the School Senior Leadership Team (Head Teachers, Deputy Heads and Head of Departments) to support Mathematics Departments to develop the quality of teaching and learning; develop and manage resources to achieve excellent outcomes for students.

The role is predominantly classroom based, with 50-75% of the working week working alongside teachers in supporting their teaching.

Key Responsibilities

School Leadership

  • Establish and lead regular Professional Learning Community meetings to enable the sharing of best practice.
  • Work intensely with a small number of focus schools to support outcomes in maths, as directed by school leadership. This is typically in the form of Intensive Programmes (10-week support, PLCs, team meetings and visits). The nature of visits and support might include training, modelling, co-teaching, feedback and coaching.
  • Work with Heads of Maths one-to-one and in smaller groups to develop and act on plans to improve outcomes across all grades.

Teaching and Learning

  • To support the quality of teachers’ planning and delivery of lessons.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning in mathematics and progress towards meeting agreed targets across the school.
  • Develop and deliver in-house maths training programmes based on a needs’ analysis.
  • To assist the Head of Maths to identify resource needs and to contribute to the efficient and effective use of both physical and IT resources.
  • Support the selection, design and quality assurance of assessments.
  • Support the design and delivery of training to support schools with the recording and use of data.
  • Evaluate the use of digital learning tools and work to support and promote effective use of these tools, particularly for home learning.

Curriculum

  • To ensure that the schools’ curriculum and resourcing needs are met, delivery of the curriculum is ambitious and tailored to the needs of the department.
  • To assist in the process of curriculum development and change to ensure continued relevance to the needs of students, examination bodies and our aims and strategic objectives.
  • To assist the Heads of Maths to ensure that the curriculum area provides a range of teaching which complements the school’s strategic objectives.
  • To assist in the development of appropriate syllabuses, resources, curriculum maps, marking policies and teaching strategies in the subject area and faculty.

The requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Education (Mathematics) or an equivalent in the respective field
  • Master’s in Education or an equivalent in the respective field will be desirable
  • TSC Certification
  • At least 5 years school teaching experience
  • Experience leading and teaching Maths across a school
  • Experience of raising attainment of all students
  • Experience of leading change and improvement across a department
  • Substantial knowledge of the Maths curriculum and related pedagogy
  • Experience of mentoring and coaching other staff including delivery of CPD to teachers
  • Ability to plan and deliver effective training and development programmes which meet identified needs of each school
  • Data analysis and using department performance data to inform decision-making
  • Excellent interpersonal, planning and organisational skills
  • Excellent oral and written language proficiency in English
  • IT proficiency
  • High degree of professionalism, commitment and integrity
  • Cultural awareness, adaptability, understanding and sensitivity
  • Commitment to promote the safety and wellbeing of students, ensuring that the school’s Child Protection and Safeguarding policies and procedures are promoted
  • Willingness to travel across the network to visit schools in different regions using public transport whenever practicable, and when necessary, work outside normal working day to achieve deadlines
