Job Purpose / Objective: To implement and monitor the nutrition project interventions aimed at contributing to improved children well being outcomes within the operation area.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

Programming

  • Participate in daily ward rounds in the SC ward with the medical team. Train the nutrition team in case detection and home-based care.
  • Mentor the nutrition assistant staff to manage patients with acute malnutrition as per protocol.
  • Train and mentor IRC staff and other key stakeholders in GMP, IYCF, MNDC, IMAM; especially the OTP and SC staff.
  • Ensure the establishment of nutrition monitoring activities and train health staff in case detection and referral system.
  • Ensure admissions and discharge of eligible beneficiaries (severe acute malnutrition cases with medical complications) in the SC:
  • Identify severely acute malnourished children with medical complication and decide the need for inpatient care.
  • Decide which patients should be admitted rapidly with an abbreviation history and examination after formal admission and the start of treatment.
  • Ensure correct treatment of severely malnourished patients as per national guidelines.
  • Ensure recording of all the necessary information on the registration book, treatment sheet, follow up card at admission and discharge for each beneficiary.
  • Ensure admission and discharge criteria implemented is correct and in accordance with standard protocol.
  • Provide health education and counselling to caregivers of children admitted in the stabilization centre..
  • Ensure that the systematic treatment and drugs are given correctly to the beneficiaries.
  • Identified patient who need to be transfer to another phase or OTP, patient with failure to respond to treatment and patients who need to be discharged.
  • Identification of absence and defaulters from stabilization center and follow up at home through volunteers network and/or NUT/CHP staff
  • stock management of drugs and feeds needed in the stabilization center
  • Collection and compilation of the daily, weekly and monthly statistics reports
Supervision and leadership
  • Directly supervise nutrition assistants in OTP/SFP programs.
  • Supervise and work in strict collaboration with the nutrition team in the screening activities of severely malnourished children.
  • Identify training gaps for the incentive staff and beneficiaries within nutrition program and communicate the same to the program manager.
Networking and coordination
  • Ensure proper communication, coordination and harmonization of tools with the different stakeholders involved in food/nutrition activities.
  • Develop and coordinate the adherence and reporting of nutrition education sessions as per developed annual plan.
  • In collaboration with the Nutrition Manager and the logistics officer follow-up food provision.
  • Create appropriate linkages and referral for nutrition activities.
  • Work closely with other health programs in spirit of integration for maximum output.
  • Attend all program implementation meetings.
Required Qualification:
  • Diploma in nursing.
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Must possess at least three (3) years’ experience in implementing nutrition related activities in a busy community set up.
  • S/He must possess ability to analyze and interpret both quantitative and qualitative programmed data.
  • Must possess excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must have cognate skills in computer appreciation.
  • MUST possess a high level of integrity and with good interpersonal skills
  • Ready to work in difficult environmental conditions.
Required Experience:
  • Qualification in nursing as KRCHN
  • Addition nutrition training in CMAM/IMAM and MIYCN is an added advantage.
  • Experience in working in a stabilization center will be an added advantage.
  • Strong communication skills, oral, written and presentation.
  • Previous experience in Arid and Semi Arid Lands of Kenya
  • Previous experience working in insecure contexts
  • Extremely flexible, and have the ability to cope with stressful situations.
  • Strong background in humanitarian projects.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, E- mail, out look
