Job Description

St Andrew’s School, Turi is highly respected in Kenya and regarded as one of the leading international schools in East Africa. Numbering 550 pupils, it comprises two semi-autonomous schools: a Preparatory School of circa 220 pupils between the ages of 3 and 13 and a Senior School of circa 330 pupils between the ages of 13 and 18

The Role

St Andrew’s, Turi  is seeking to appoint a highly motivated passionate individuals to take up Peripatetic Music and instrumental teaching in subjects in any of the following families; guitar and orchestral percussion in our Prep School and Senior School.

There are some things that are essential to working with us:

  • The successful candidate will need to be able to support the School’s aims and Christian ethos.
  • To teach MUSIC lessons to students of a wide range from Prep to Senior School and to prepare them for graded MUSIC examinations.
  • The candidate will need to be up to comprehensively dispense ALL areas of the ABRSM, LCM & UNISA Curricula.
  • Able to write detailed well-structured reports
  • Proficient Lesson planning skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to motivate others
  • Determination and perseverance
  • imagination, Innovation and Creativity
  • To be responsible for arranging a timetable that is suitable for the needs of the pupils and takes into consideration other school commitments.  Assistance with timetabling is available from the Assistant Deputy Head Academics and the Directors of Co-Curricula.
  • identify clear teaching objectives and specifying how they will be taught and assessed.
  • maintaining discipline in accordance with the School’s procedures and encouraging good practice with regard to punctuality, behaviour and standards of work

Knowledge and Experience

Qualifications

Essential

  • A Grade & qualification and above from ABRSM, LCM, UNISA or an equivalent examining body, in their main instrument
  • University Undergraduate Degree or Equivalent from a recognised University
  • Registration with Teacher’s Service Commission will be an added advantage

Desirable

  • Experience of performance skills needed for musical theatre, major School Musical Events, Orchestral Weekend, End of Year Concerts, etc
  • Actively taking part in Co-Curricular Music, helping to run Ensembles & Orchestra
  • Arranging recitals and concerts for pupils’ families and friends
  • Assessing students abilities, providing feedback and writing reports
  • Ensuring up-to-date knowledge and awareness of examination requirements and preparing the students for examinations
  • Teaching music theory, aural skills and practical techniques to students

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate with parents, students of all ages, management, and other staff
  • Well developed problem solving skills
  • Self motivated and able to work alone without direction
  • Adaptable and flexible with working patterns when required

Desirable

  • Evidence of being able to lead, manage and be responsible for initiatives/developments
  • Experience of arranging events during school term

Safeguarding
Essential

  • Commitment to the safeguarding and protection of children and to the personal development of our students.
  • Understanding of the issues surrounding the safeguarding of children and commitment to child welfare and safety
  • Knowledge of KCSIE and safeguarding requirements

Desirable

  • Knowledge of child protection procedures
