Job Description

The company opened its first manufacturing facility in Mombasa, Kenya, in 1962, rapidly widening its reach to include further countries in East Africa, and then Southern Africa. In 2003, all operating companies were reversed into the current holding company called Safal Investments Mauritius Limited and conduct its business across Africa as the Safal Group.Today, the Safal Group manufactures in 10 African countries and sells and markets its building solutions across the continent.

The main purpose of the position is:
The incumbent will be responsible for the accounting and internal controls in the plant and overseeing the various financial transactions, accounting controls, and accounting functions. Also responsible for administering the plant’s cost control function, including coordinating the plant’s forecasting and budgeting. The position is central point of contact between the plant and other business operation.

Key responsibilities:

  • Monitor, analyse, and report monthly actual results against the budget
  • Manage and oversee all accounting operations at the plant
  • Manage month-end closing and prepare operational reports for the plant
  • Analyse variances and communicates explanations to management with recommended actions
  • Develop and implement budgeting and financial reporting systems to provide timely and relevant information to plant and other business operations and cost control
  • Support the plant and operation team to achieve efficiency in production, plant and machine
  •  Prepare forecasts of income statement and statement of fund requirements for the plant. Prepare monthly and rolling forecast reports for the plant
  • Work across organization boundaries and all levels of the organisation to achieve plant and organisation  objectives
  • Recommend best practices in finance management and operation e.g. process improvements, financial modelling and procedures changes
  • Oversee and manage the daily operations of the plant Accounting/Finance
  • Drive the plant to meet or exceed all annual financial and operational metrics
  • Work closely with manufacturing and plant leadership to ensure that all financial transactions and reporting are complete, accurate and timely
  • Support and lead the coordination of all internal and external financial and operational audits and address any audit findings within the plant
  • Perform frequent walk-throughs of manufacturing operations with Plant Manager/Leadership to address production and costing issues
  • Establish and implement short- and long-range department goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures
  • Support and offer advisory in cost reduction in procurement process
  • Undertake variance analysis and cost control reporting and recommendations
  • Maintain integrity of financial reports prepared by the plant/at the plant level.
  • Monitor and report purchase commitments and spending for all capital programs.
  • Conduct follow-up audits to ensure compliance for all significant capital investments.
  • Manage the deployment of cost saving and other programs to provide operating economies and improve profitability.
  • Monitor and provide opportunities to support continuous improvement of Plant Productivity / Gross Utilization. Support other Operations initiatives.
  • Provide leadership to ensure adequate cost accounting processes are in place, including standard cost updates, physical inventory verification, periodic cycle counts, etc.
  • Refines and maintains the integrity of the plant’s standard cost system.

Budgetary responsibility:

  • Ensure the implementation of plant budget parameters.

Requirements

Qualifications required:

  • Minimum academic qualification: Bachelors degree with CPA (K), CFA, ACCA, CA, or equivalent
  • Qualifications as an added advantage: Master’s degree in MBA or Equivalent
  • Professional registration: ICPAK

Experience required:

  • General work experience (years): 10–15 years
  • Specific to the position (level/discipline/years): 8 years
  • Industry: Manufacturing

Language requirements:

  • Kiswahili
  • English

Computer literacy:

  • MS Office packages
  • Outstanding knowledge of electronic spreadsheets
  • Working knowledge of ERP system (Preferred SAP)
