Job Description

BURN designs, manufactures, and distributes aspirational fuel-efficient cooking products that save lives and forests in the developing world.BURN has revolutionized the global cookstove sector by proving the business case for selling a high quality, locally manufactured and unsubsidized cookstoves.Since 2013, BURN has sold 200,000+ high quality, locally manufactured and unsubsidized jikokoas â„¢ stoves in East Africa. These stoves have helped 1,000,000+ beneficiaries save $39 million in fuel expenditures and 626,221 tons of wood while reducing indoor air pollution by 65%. BURN currently sells ~10,000 stoves per month and intend to double sales by the end of 2017.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Head of Carbon Strategy, the individual will be responsible for supporting the development of our business. This role will research policy developments in our current and expansion markets, and support lobbying efforts with governments.

We are looking for someone interested in working in a dynamic, challenging environment, for a company that recognizes and rewards creativity and initiative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake detailed policy research in areas of strategic interest – including the voluntary and compliance carbon markets, and tax regulations.
  • Select, summarize, and present key policy developments to management.
  • Maintain a database of global policy developments/.
  • Prepare presentation materials to showcase BURN to government ministers.
  • Draft letters, and prepare application forms for government programs.
  • Support the Head of Government Relations on visits to governments across Africa (mix of in-person and remote)
  • Liaise with government staff to schedule meetings with ministers.
  • Respond to consultations on behalf of BURN.
  • Produce regular and ad-hoc research reports.
  • Work closely with other departments (e.g., carbon, legal) to ensure all teams have accurate information on relevant policy and legislation.
  • Complete all reporting activities accurately and on time.

Key Qualifications 

  • Master’s or bachelor’s degree – ideally in public policy, politics, law, or similar
  • Ideally at least 2 years of experience in a relevant role
  • Demonstrated ability to digest large volumes of information, select the key points, grasp the “so what,” and present it clearly to management.
  • Ability to read, understand and summarise legal documents.
  • Excellent research and analysis skills
  • Knowledge of the carbon markets and environmental policy.
  • Knowledge of tax and trading regulations.
