Job Description

Tharaka Nithi County is one of the forty seven (47) counties in Kenya. It borders the Counties of Embu to the South and South West, Meru to the North and North East, Kirinyiga and Nyeri to the West and Kitui to the East and South East. The county lies between latitude 000 07′ and 000 26′ South and between longitudes 370 19′ and 370 46′ East. The County is approximately 2,662.1 Km2; including the shared Mt Kenya forest estimated to have 360Km2 in Tharaka Nithi County. In addition to shared common Identity we share a common responsibility too – Build social cohesion, by encouraging inter community dialogue and understanding – Promote economic growth – Create a community’s competitive edge in all sectors of our Nation’s development.

Requirements for Appointment

  •  Be a Kenyan Citizen;
  •  Served in the grade of Principal Agricultural Officer for a minimum period of three (3) years;
  •  Bachelors of Science degree in any of the following disciplines:- Agriculture, Agronomy, Agribusiness
  • Management and Enterprise Development, Agribusiness Management, Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, Agricultural Extension and Education, Agricultural Marketing, Agricultural Resource Management, Agriculture and Extension, Agriculture and Home Economics, Agriculture and Human Ecology, Agriculture Economics, Crop
  • Protection, Dry-land Resource Management, Dry- land Agriculture and Enterprise Development, Farm Management, Home Economics, Agricultural Engineering, Horticulture, Food science and Technology or its relevant and equivalent qualification from a recognized institution;
  •  Master’s degree in any of the following disciplines:-
  • Agribusiness Management, Agribusiness, Agricultural and Natural Resource Management, Agricultural Education, Agricultural Extension and Education, Agricultural

  •  Certificate in Senior Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;
  •  Certificate of membership to a relevant professional body;
  •  Certificate in computer application skills; and
  •  Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.

Duties and Responsibilities Duties

The Principal Itugururu Agricultural Training Institute reports to the County Director of Agriculture and responsibilities at this level will entail: –

  •  Organizing and leading regular meetings of Agricultural Training Institute;
  •  Ensuring a departmental committee structure which enables the business of the department to be conducted with Agricultural Training Institute input;
  •  Ensuring Agricultural Training Institute input in decisions impacting the department;
  •  Developing and implementing a department/school strategic plan including metrics for evaluating progress and assessing progress annually;
  •  Provide leadership in curriculum development and revision;
  •  Ensure that the department has valid student learning outcomes for all of its courses and academic programs, that they are regularly assessed and that the results of assessment are used for continuous improvement;
  •  Prepare for and organize the periodic reviews of the department’s academic programs;
  •  Develop clear guidelines for Agricultural Training Institute recruitment, retention and promotion;
  •  Ensure a productive environment for research and scholarly activity;
  •  Promote opportunities for internal and external support of research and scholarship;
  •  Support trans-disciplinary collaboration;
  •  Provide budgetary oversight;
  •  Recommend the assignment of space for departmental needs according to university policy;
  •  Assign and supervise teaching programs/ activities;
  •  Ensure sufficient technical support;
  •  Supervise professional development of office and support unit staff
  •  Seeking approval for Agricultural Training Institute searches;
  •  Articulating the policies, processes and expectations for tenure andpromotion;
  •  Providing prompt, meaningful, fair and written annualperformance evaluations;
  •  Maintain collegial relationships with other department heads as well as Alumni, County and National Government
