Job Description

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Kenya is an independent prosecutorial authority established by Article 157 of the constitution of Kenya.The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is the National Prosecuting Authority in Kenya which has been mandated by the Constitution to prosecute all criminal cases in the country.

Requirement for Appointment  

Qualifications

  • Postgraduate Diploma
  • For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
  •  A cumulative number of seven (7) years relevant experience from the date of admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya; (ii) Served for at least two (2) years at the level of Senior Prosecution Counsel DPP 7;
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized university;
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies from the Council of Legal Education;
  • Admission as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya;
  • Demonstrated merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results; and
  • Meet the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010; Integrity, Leadership, Honesty, Accountability and Discipline in the service to people.
  • NOTE: Possession of a Senior Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution will be an added advantage.

 Duties & Responsibilities

An officer at this level may be deployed at any of the Departments at the Headquarters or a County Office. Specifically, duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking, taking over or discontinue prosecutions on assigned cases;
  • Implementation of prosecutorial policies and guidelines to ensure quality service delivery;
  • Implementation of individual work plans to ensure that the activities are directed towards achievement of the strategic plan;
  • Complying with the principles of National values and principles of Good Governance, Human Rights and transparency in order to gain the trust of stakeholders;
  • Preparing court documents and argue applications and petitions;
  • To lodge and prosecute appeals;
  • Maintaining a record of data and prepare reports on all the matters attended to;
  • Preparing briefs on different legal cases as assigned in a manner that meets the legal quality standards set;
  • Preparing legal instruments and opinions in line with the mandate of the Office and the ODPP strategic plan;
  • Analysing investigation files for sufficiency of evidence and advise on whether to or not to charge; and
  • To undertake research on assigned legal issues and compile reports on findings to ensure that quality standards are upheld in the delivery of prosecution services.
