Job Description

FilmAid is an international development and humanitarian communications organization that harnesses the power and influence of media and the arts to respond to emergencies as well as promote social change through dialogue in order to protect the wellbeing of displaced and vulnerable populations by building stronger, healthier, and more informed communities around the world.

Summary

As a Protection Assistant at FilmAid Kenya (FAK), s/he will play a critical role in supporting the efficient planning, implementation and coordination of social protection and livelihood project activities. These activities aim to enhance access to information on social protection, labor market opportunities (including rights to work and rights at work), employment, business, and entrepreneurship for both the host community and refugees in Dadaab Refugee Camp, Garissa County and Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Settlement in Turkana County.

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Project activities are planned, implemented and monitored in accordance with grants’ contractual obligations, FilmAid’s approach and methodologies.
  • There is effective communication and coordination with internal programs staff, senior management team, private sector partner, donor and other stakeholders to ensure achievement of the project objective.
  • Project progress is properly documented, highlighting lessons and success to inform quality improvement. This includes and is not limited to working closely with the MERL department to develop quality, timely internal and external narrative and statistical reports in accordance with reporting requirements.
  • Ensuring robust accountability to affected people mechanism throughout the entire project cycle.

Project Planning and Implementation:

Access to Labor Market Information:

  • Ensure that all interventions are implemented in an inclusive manner promoting gender equality and the empowerment and protection of all persons of concern.
  • Work with key stakeholders to promote a common understanding of labor rights and legal situations for refugees in Kenya.
  • Facilitate dialogue on refugees’ rights to work and rights at work, addressing barriers to accessing labor markets.
  • Organize Community Engagement activities (Film-based workshops, Public Dialogues), and production of films to educate refugees on business registration and work permits application procedures in Kenya.
  • Implement interactive radio programming to engage stakeholders and stimulate dialogue on relevant topics.
  • Support in organizing Public Dialogues about the community’s rights through the FilmAid Annual Film Festival

Social Protection:

  • Support planning processes based on sound understanding of the operational and contextual realities in project implementation sites.
  • Develop and deliver reliable and engaging information through one-way and two-way communication channels to promote social protection awareness among refugees.
  • Collaborate with social protection actors, including NHIF, NSSF, UNHCR, and county offices, to ensure accurate information is integrated into media production.
  • Engage refugees on social protection opportunities, particularly NHIF and NSSF, using innovative communication approaches.
  • Coordinate Production of one and two-way information campaigns through SMS, radio, and the Mobile Information Caravan Service to educate refugees on the right to register, where and how to register, and the benefits of social protection services.

Skills Development:

  • Collaborate closely with the Media Trainer to ensure that alumni receive essential information regarding employment opportunities and the labor market.

Reporting, monitoring, and documentation:

  • In collaboration with the MERL department, ensure collection data, continuous tracking of indicators and reporting.
  • Monitor and report on the number of information broadcasts and people reached through multi- media channels used, collecting feedback and ensuring robust accountability to affected people mechanisms.
  • Ensure timely submission of monthly work plan and good quality project reports (Bi-weekly, Monthly, Quarterly and End of Project), including any other reports requiring programme inputs. The reports should enlighten, inspire and record compliance for internal and external use, and capture age, gender and disability disaggregate data.
  • Support programmatic learning structures that capture lessons, good practices and challenges for learning
  • In coordination with the Senior Program Officer, develop and maintain positive relationships between FilmAid Kenya, partners and stakeholders.
  • Ensure an elaborate project information and knowledge management system through proper archiving of project documents and documentation of project activities including action plans and success narratives.
  • Representation for FilmAid Kenya in meetings with stakeholders and partners as required or assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge sharing and management:

  • In coordination with the Senior Program Officer, develop and maintain positive relationships between FilmAid Kenya, partners and stakeholders.
  • Ensure an elaborate project information and knowledge management system through proper archiving of project documents and documentation of project activities including action plans and success narratives.
  • Representation for FilmAid Kenya in meetings with stakeholders and partners as required or assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in a relevant field, such as Social Sciences, Project Management, Community Development, International Development, or a related discipline, from an accredited institution

Prior Work Experience:

  • For diploma holders: A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in project management, livelihoods, social protection, or related fields, ideally within the context of refugee populations or ASAL (Arid and Semi-Arid Lands) regions.
  • For degree holders: A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in project management, livelihoods, social protection, or related fields, preferably within the context of refugee populations or ASAL regions.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with various stakeholders.
