Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)

Job Purpose

  • We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to lead and coordinate our radiation protection programme within the Radiology Department. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring regulatory compliance, promoting a strong safety culture, and protecting patients, staff, and the public from unnecessary radiation exposure.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The Radiation Safety Officer will:

  • Lead the hospital’s radiation safety and regulatory compliance programme.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA).
  • Monitor radiation exposure, dosimetry programmes, and staff licensing compliance.
  • Coordinate safety audits, inspections, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Develop and deliver radiation and MRI safety training to staff.
  • Oversee quality control processes for protective equipment and radiation-generating devices.
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation, records, licences, and safety procedures.

Minimum Qualifications, Regulatory & Legal Requirements

Essential

  • Diploma or Degree in Radiography, Medical Imaging Sciences, Radiation Physics, or a related field
  • Registration and valid licensing with the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) and the Society of Radiography in Kenya (SORK)
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in a diagnostic imaging environment
  • Strong knowledge of radiation protection principles (ALARA), MRI safety standards, and regulatory requirements

Desirable

  • Radiation Safety Officer or radiation protection certification
  • Experience supporting accreditation and regulatory inspections
  • Experience conducting staff training or managing e-learning programmes
