Job Description

Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will work with the Principal Investigator to conduct the social science research, which is aimed at understanding the factors that could affect successful implementation of house modification study. Social science methods will include Focused Group Discussions, Key Informant Interviews, KAP surveys, free-listing, rating, ranking and night time member observation. The research will be carried out in Siaya and Kwale counties

Responsibilities

  •  Conduct Focused Group Discussions (FGDs), Key Informant Interviews (KII) in the study community.
  •  Transcribe and translate audio files and submit typed transcripts including interview summary
  • notes to the study PI in timely manner.
  •  Review transcripts for any spelling, grammar or formatting errors, as well as other inconsistencies.
  •  Administer survey questionnaires in the study population.
  •  Adhere to confidentiality guidelines and respecting sensitive information.
  •  Ensure that data quality assurance procedures are strictly adhered to.
  •  Participate in planning meetings and scheduled conference calls with PI and study partners.
  •  Perform any other related duties that may be assigned from time to time.

Essential requirements

  •  Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Community Health and/ development, Social work or related Social Science discipline from a recognized institution.
  •  Fluency in both oral and written Luo/ Mijikenda-Digo languages.
  •  Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
  •  High proficiency with Microsoft Word.
  •  Ability to ride a motorcycle.
  •  Willingness to reside in field study site.

Terms of employment: This is a three (3) years contract, renewable subject to availability of funds, with a probation period for the first 3 months. Salary is as per the stated scale and applicable scheme of service.
