Job Description

Bayes, which is the trading name of PI Capital is a diversified Kenyan Microfinance. This association gives the mobile lender access to a number of bankable services based on the robust technological infrastructure that its parent company has assembled. Bayes is an award-winning micro finance institution based in Nairobi, Kenya that provides mobile loans,logbook loans, asset financing, salary advance and merchant loans.\

Summary

The Risk and Compliance Officer will oversee all aspects of risk management and regulatory compliance across Pi Group, including PYCS and Pi Capital. This position will be responsible for ensuring that both entities comply with legal standards and internal policies, particularly in relation to the Central Bank of Kenya regulations. The ideal candidate will have a robust understanding of credit risk management, operational risk, Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Know Your Customer (KYC), and the Financial Reporting Centre (FRC) standards.

Key Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Risk Management:

  • Design, plan, and implement an overall risk management process for the group.
  • Conduct risk assessments, analysing potential risks and identifying, describing, and estimating risks affecting the business.
  • Monitor adherence to risk management protocols across all workplace activities.
  • Prepare risk evaluations, comparing estimated risks against company criteria such as costs, legal requirements, and environmental factors.
  • Develop and maintain risk reporting to various stakeholders, ensuring that different audiences understand the risks relevant to their areas of responsibility.
  • Ensure that risk management practices are integrated into the operational framework of the business.
  • Credit Risk Management (Specific to Pi Capital)
  • Conduct comprehensive credit risk assessments to evaluate the creditworthiness of borrowers and financial instruments.
  • Develop and implement credit risk management strategies and policies to ensure sound lending practices and minimize credit losses.
  • Analyse credit data and financial statements to identify trends, patterns, and potential credit risks.
  • Assess and ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of credit risk models and methodologies.
  • Monitor credit risk exposures and portfolio performance, developing mitigation strategies as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal teams such as lending, underwriting, and collections to optimize credit risk decisions.
  • Compliance and Regulatory Engagement
  • Oversee compliance with all regulatory requirements from the Central Bank of Kenya, Communications Authority and other relevant bodies.
  • Liaise with regulatory authorities, external auditors, and credit rating agencies to manage credit risk inquiries, examinations, and reporting requirements.
  • Provide reviews of the status of compliance risk and mitigating activities.
  • Assist in developing and updating policies and procedures to enforce compliance standards.
  • Training and Development
  • Provide training to staff at all levels to build risk awareness within the organization.
  • Ensure that all staff recognize and manage risks as a core part of their responsibilities.
  • Reporting and Communication:
  • Prepare and present risk reports appropriately for different audiences, including senior management, the Audit and Risk Committee, and the Board of Directors.
  • Report major risks, including mitigation strategies and escalation of critical risk issues.

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or related field.
  • More than 5 years proven in risk management and compliance, preferably in a fintech or financial services environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of regulatory compliance, including AML, KYC, and credit risk management.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification in risk management or compliance (e.g., CRISC, CRCM).
  • Experience working with regulatory bodies such as the Central Bank of Kenya.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to manage cross-functional teams.
