Job Description

The Co-operative Bank of Kenya Limited is incorporated in Kenya under the Company Act and is also licensed to do the business of banking under the Banking Act. The Bank was initially registered under the Co-operative Societies Act at the point of founding in 1965

Job Purpose

  • Providing concise legal support, advice and opinion(s) relating to the conduct of the business and support units of the institution based on sound legal principles;
  • Reviewing, drafting and providing legal advice on the adequacy of the legal documents for the institution in relation to third party contracts;
  • Providing instructions for various litigation matters affecting the institution and ensure the best strategy is employed by external service providers in handling the litigation;
  • Protecting the overall Tai Sacco interests vis a vis the emerging and prevailing laws and regulations of Kenya and minimizing legal risk to the Institution.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

The Incumbent will report to the Chief Executive Officer and will be responsible for:

  • Internal business processes – Contracting and reviewing Legal documents for business and support units.
  • Financial-Ensure all debt recovery through legal processes is handled in the best interest of the Sacco and its members and that the recovery process is well effected and supported.
  • Internal Legal Administration-Handle all internal legal administrative tasks as may be allocated from time to time.
  • Litigation Management and Recoveries Support-Issue prompt and clear instructions to advocates on non-debt and debt recovery cases litigation matters, providing advocates with relevant documents in support of Tai Sacco cases.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from an accredited law school
  • At least two years post admission.
  • A Member of the Certified Public Secretaries;
  • Must possess a valid practicing certificate;
  • Post Graduate Diploma in law from Kenya School of Law;
  • Be a Registered member of the Law society of Kenya in good standing;
  • Knowledge of the SACCO business model & other operational issues of the SACCO;
  • Good analytical, communication, and writing skills;
  • Excellent organization and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail.
