Job Description

JOB TITLE: Senior Accountant – Agribusiness

Location: Kenya

Reports To: Head of Finance

Direct Reports: Accounts Assistants / Cost Accountant / Farm Clerks

Salary Range

KSh 150,000 – 200,000 per month (Gross)
(Commensurate with experience)

Job Purpose

To oversee financial management and reporting for a diversified agribusiness (dairy, crops, livestock, and seed production), while deputising the Head of Finance in strategic, operational, and compliance functions.

The role provides data-driven insights for decision-making, ensures robust internal controls and tax compliance, and supports profitability, cost efficiency, and sustainable growth across multiple farm operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Reporting & Business Analysis

Prepare monthly management accounts, financial statements, and board reports.
Perform variance analysis and provide actionable recommendations.
Analyse performance by cost centres, product lines (milk, crops, livestock, seeds), and farms.
Develop and monitor KPIs (yield, cost per litre/kg, margins).
Support strategic decisions through financial modelling and scenario analysis.
2. Agribusiness Costing & Inventory Control

Lead cost accounting across:
Dairy & Beef operations (feed, herd health, milk production, Steers management)
Crop production cycles
Livestock management
Seed production and processing
Manage inventory controls for farm inputs and outputs.
Conduct stock reconciliations and periodic counts.
Identify cost drivers and implement cost optimisation initiatives.

3. Budgeting, Forecasting & Planning

Lead annual budgeting and rolling forecasts.
Develop cashflow projections aligned to seasonal cycles.
Partner with operational managers to align budgets with production targets.
Monitor budget performance and recommend corrective actions.
4. Taxation & Statutory Compliance

Ensure full compliance with Kenyan tax regulations, including:
VAT (including agricultural exemptions and zero-rated supplies)
PAYE and statutory deductions (NSSF, NHIF, Housing Levy where applicable)
Withholding Tax (WHT) and Withholding VAT.
Corporate Income Tax
Oversee accurate and timely tax filings and payments.
Manage KRA audits, queries, and reconciliations.
Provide tax planning insights to optimise the company’s tax position within legal frameworks.
5. Internal Controls & Risk Management

Design and enforce robust internal control systems across farms and departments.
Strengthen controls around cash handling, procurement, payroll, and inventory.
Ensure compliance with IFRS, company policies, and regulatory standards.
Identify and mitigate financial and operational risks.
6. ERP Systems & Data Management

Oversee utilisation and optimisation of ERP systems (SAP, SAGE or equivalent).
Ensure data accuracy, integration, and real-time reporting.
Support ERP enhancements and user training.
7. Cashflow, Banking & Treasury

Manage cashflow, liquidity, and working capital.
Oversee bank reconciliations, payments, and collections.
Liaise with financial institutions on loans, overdrafts, and project financing.
8. Audit & Compliance

Coordinate internal and external audits.
Ensure timely resolution of audit findings.
Maintain proper documentation and compliance readiness.
9. Operational & Commercial Support

Support sales teams with pricing, margin analysis, and customer profitability.
Work with procurement to drive cost efficiency and value for money.
Provide financial input into contracts, tenders, and business proposals.
Willing to work and visit the units for stock take, work review and be willing to work at the unit locations when called upon.
10. Leadership & Deputising Role

Act as second-in-command to the Head of Finance, stepping in when required.
Support development and execution of financial strategy.
Supervise and mentor the finance team.
Drive a culture of accountability, performance, and continuous improvement.
11. Project & Strategic Support

Support capital projects, farm expansion, and agribusiness investments.
Conduct feasibility studies and ROI analysis.
Provide insights into business growth and diversification strategies.
Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or Commerce
CPA (K) / ACCA – Mandatory
Minimum 8+ years’ relevant experience, with at least:
3–5 years in a senior or supervisory role
Experience in agribusiness, manufacturing, or FMCG highly preferred
Strong experience in ERP systems and financial modelling
Proven track record in tax compliance, budgeting, costing, and audit
Key Competencies

Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making ability
Deep knowledge of taxation and regulatory compliance in Kenya
Expertise in cost accounting and agribusiness operations
Strong internal controls and risk management skills
Advanced proficiency in ERP systems and Excel
Excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills
Ability to operate in a multi-site farm environment
