Summary

The Senior Instructional/Learning Designer will focus on SME programme and content development providing consultation within the broader learning team, taking design initiative on all aspects of programme, workshop and content development.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Product Manager – SME and be an important part of the AMI Learning Team.

In this role, you will oversee learning design and content development efforts in key strategic projects, including an ongoing core and focus/short programme development to support world class learning design to support M/SMEs across Africa. You’ll collaborate with project partners, AMI Internal Stakeholders, multimedia developers, technology platform team, and subject matter experts to create learning experiences that demonstrate sound learning strategies, produce desired learning outcomes, and develop targeted competencies and practices. As a Learning/Instructional Designer, you’ll need to be able to thrive and succeed in a very collaborative, fast-paced environment with competing priorities.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide strategic learning input to the SME Product team – to help develop innovative learning products, adapting the methodology, supporting product to scale and adapt to the market and technical innovation.
  • S/he will design scalable learning programmes for SMEs that are impactful, scalable, and world-class.
  • Review customer and learner feedback with Product team and adapt products, programmes and content design iteratively.

Team / Learning Leadership:

  •  Provide strategic direction to AMI’s learning methodology for SME – to help develop innovative learning practice, adapting the methodology, supporting learning design processes that scale and adapt to the market and technical innovation.
  • She/he will manage the Learning & Content Design Teams in SME segment – including supporting the processes, templates and Quality Assurance plans to support the development of world class learning products. This will include supporting the recruitment, retention and growth of this team.

Learning & Content design

  •  S/he will design scalable learning programmes for Entrepreneurship that are impactful, scalable, and world-class. The design of new scalable blended and virtual learning programmes is the primary responsibility of the Senior Learning Designer – in collaboration with the Chief Product Officer, and Product Management teams.
  • Support in the management of Learning Experience– including innovating on the cross-functional learning project teams that oversee and iterate blended and virtual learning programme design
  • Support the team and/or deliver workshop design to support AMI’s blended learning programmes. These learning events are a lynchpin in AMI’s learning methodology and provide the experiences necessary to encourage ongoing engagement outside of the workshop.
  • Oversee the Content Development Processes – focusing on building courses, tools, toolkits and innovative learning content that meets the needs of our diverse clientele and remains efficient and agile. AMI builds online learning content suited to our key markets, including video-based courses, mobile and desktop-friendly libraries of curated tools and toolkits, and a range of content suited to a range of technologies.
  • Scope and estimate level of effort for project deliverables
  • Design and develop learning materials in accordance with established design models for instructor and virtual instructor-led training, multimedia, video, and other learning-related materials
  • Consult with other instructional/learning designers, project partners, or subject matter experts regarding learning strategies, blended design, and business requirements that impact the learning needs and learning solutions initiatives
  • Conduct analyses of target audience, training requirements, and media requirements
  • Design training materials and assessments in adherence to brand standards
  • Brief and debrief a team of facilitators on new and customised learning designs
  • Test training materials to ensure their quality
  • Adapt as necessary given feedback from implementation
  • The Senior Learning Designer – SME will support the Product Manager – Learning to identify and plan the review and maintenance – including core design collateral for AMI’s learning content and products.

Requirements

Skills & attributes

  • Deep knowledge of adult learning theory and how to apply these theories in the design of learning experiences
  • Recent experience designing instruction for leaders including the design of multimedia training, paper-based training materials, experiential workshops, and related documentation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills . Ability to edit and perform quality assurance (QA) on your own work
  • Understanding of agile methodology and ability to handle multiple priorities in a very fluid working environment
  • High proficiency and productivity in G Suite tools, including Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, etc.
  • Exhibit solid interpersonal and communication skills that enable successful internal and external interaction in a variety of modes including face-to-face meetings, phone calls, phone conferences, virtual meetings, and written communication.
  • Ability to work on your own and with diverse teams
  • Work well with people. Culturally adept. Ability to communicate effectively across different levels, with local and international teams and stakeholders

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5+ years of related instructional design and development experience (essential)
  • Design-build, Instructional Design, Instructional Training, E-learning
  • Experience working in an entrepreneurial or skills development environment (essential)
  • Masters degree or equivalent experience
  • AMI will consider candidates from any country, but preference will be given to African nationals. Candidates must be willing to live in Africa, Nairobi preferred, and free to travel across Africa.
