Job Description

Namati is dedicated to placing the power of law in the hands of people. For billions of people around the world, the law is broken. It’s an abstraction — or worse, a threat — but not something we can use to exercise our basic rights. Namati is building a global movement of community legal workers–also known as barefoot lawyers, or community paralegals–who empower people to understand, use, and shape the law. These paralegals form a dynamic, creative frontline that can squeeze justice out of even broken systems.

About Job

Our Senior Officer, Land and Environmental Justice Initiative will partner with Grassroots Justice Network develop members to shared learning and collective action opportunities on land and environmental justice. This will range from co-creating a shared learning program on an environmental justice topic, like carbon rights, to supporting network members to bring collective demands to global advocacy spaces. This requires an understanding of grassroots land and environmental justice work and experience managing programs across contexts. If you think you are best suited for a role that harnesses the experience of a variety of actors to learn from one another and organize collective action,

Examples of what you might have tackled last week in this role —

  • Organized a virtual exchange session with three grassroots justice network members to share strategies and best practices on community-led monitoring, including gathering useful background reading and coordinating with team leads on presenting their data and strategies.
  • Provided technical expertise and strategic advocacy advice for two network members co-writing a practitioner’s brief on negotiating a contract with a carbon offset project.
  • Authored a policy submission on community consent and access to remedy in land investments for the African Development Bank.

For both positions, we’re looking for candidates that:

  • Have a background in land rights and/or environmental justice: You have a strong technical understanding of at least some facets of this work, and enough experience in different contexts to build considered, creative, and practical approaches to new areas of work. You know how to find and synthesize relevant information on law, policy, and regulations to develop actionable recommendations.
  • Have experience facilitating practitioner learning: You’ve worked with adult learners, facilitated training, built collective learning opportunities across coalitions, developed popular education materials, or otherwise facilitated interactive peer exchange (ideally in the realm of environmental justice or organizing).
  • Have experience working directly with (or in) impacted communities: You have experience working hand in hand with communities and grassroots groups to address justice issues. You understand the challenges our partner communities face and are committed to learning from them to build solutions that really work.
  • Are a creative, relentless problem-solver: It’s in your nature to work tirelessly on a problem — you don’t rest until you’ve identified a great solution. And although careful planning and execution define your work, when challenges arise you quickly reorient and identify the best new course of action. You’re well-regarded for your ability to make reasoned decisions, even in the face of limited or conflicting information.
  • Are collaborative and service-oriented: You greet everyone you encounter with a collaborative spirit, kindness, and empathy. You are known as a team player who brings an “all hands on deck” mindset to all projects — you’re happy to contribute however you can to advance our mission
