Job Description

The Central Bank of Kenya is a public institution established under Article 231 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010. The Bank is responsible for formulating monetary policy to achieve and maintain price stability and issuing currency. Pursuant to the CBK Act, the Central Bank promotes financial stability through regulation, supervision and licensing of financial institutions under its mandate. The Bank also provides oversight of payment, clearing and settlement systems. All these efforts are geared towards fostering liquidity, solvency and proper functioning of the financial system. The Bank also formulates and implements foreign exchange policy and manages foreign exchange reserves. CBK is the banker for, adviser to, and fiscal agent of the Government. In discharging its mandate, the Central Bank contributes to the country’s economic development and growth, and promotes the interest of the public. The Bank strives to carry out its statutory mandate effectively and efficiently guided by the principles of integrity and transparency.

Job Purpose

The Senior Technician, Plumber is responsible for supervising and maintaining plumbing and drainage maintenance works in the Bank. He/She will be responsible for maintaining and providing for the safe condition and operation of plumbing systems and installations in Bank facilities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and Repair of all plumbing installations in the Bank and prepare reports for management’s review.
  • Ensure assembling, installing, maintenance and pressure tests for all pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, drainage, sprinkler, and gas systems are done according to specifications and plumbing codes.
  • Inspect and determine sources of plumbing malfunctions and ensure complete repairs are carried out as indicated or according to work orders.
  • Ensure installation and repair of pipes, fittings, valves, fixtures, and plumbing system equipment, including sinks, commodes, water heaters, water softeners, among others is done as per the expected standards.
  • Ensure repair of kitchen equipment that incorporates gas or water consumption as carried out as per the required standards and work orders.
  • Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
  • Maintain accurate records on materials and labor and prepare relevant reports on a weekly basis.
  • Maintain an inventory of Bank-owned tools, equipment and materials in the assigned area of work.
  • Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean and safe.
  • Work with building principals to complete ongoing plumbing related works in projects.
  • Identify areas on buildings, grounds and equipment following established inspection procedures that require repairs and take appropriate action.
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed for provision of plumbing services.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment used in the day-to-day operations to ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Ensure operating tools and equipment are used in accordance to safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that require escalation to supervisor immediately.
  • Collaborate with other units in the Division to perform duties to meet the objectives of the Facility Services Division.
  • Any other duty that may be allocated by Management

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Higher National Diploma or equivalent in building services with emphasis in plumbing, including drainage, water supply, firefighting systems
  • Artisan National Trade Test Certificate Grade III/apprentice Certificate awarded by the National Industrial Training Authority or its equivalent/or higher and relevant qualification from a recognized institution.

Work Experience

  • Five (5) years’ experience of plumbing works within a large and busy organization

Technical Competencies

  • Experienced and hands-on in all practical plumbing and related building functions.
  • Knowledge of plumbing repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques.
  • Knowledge of the Kenyan plumbing code.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material by a Services Engineer.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve plumbing related problems, use hand and power tools in line with the outline guidelines.
  • Previous experience in supervision of plumbing / related works/ projects.
  • Ability to write technical specifications and estimate costs.
  • Computer skills – including use of MS Office suite, ArchiCAD/AutoCAD
