Job Description

The Aga Khan Academy Nairobi is operated by Aga Khan Education Service Kenya (AKESK), a non-profit organization, with close to a hundred years’ experience operating schools in Kenya. Our first formal schools were opened in 1918, and AKESK currently operates 11 schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret, serving close to 5,000 students with a quality, affordable education.

The position

The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKES, Kenya) operates 5 schools in various cities in Kenya and provides nursery to senior secondary education in both national and international curricula. It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.

AKES, Kenya has an opening for the position of STUDENT SUPPORT COORDINATOR to be based in Mombasa and will be required to travel to AKES, Kenya school’s country-wide.

Position Summary

The role of the Student Support Coordinator will be to enhance the ability of teachers to deliver high-quality education using responsive pedagogy and inclusive teaching methods, provide learning support leadership across AKES, Kenya, facilitate the development of policy, systems, and support, training for teachers to differentiate learning according to needs and support students who require either short- or long-term assistance with their learning.
It is expected that the Student Support Coordinator will work closely with the AKES, Kenya Head of Academics and school leaders to support the effective implementation of the AKS Student Support Framework. The successful candidate will aim to effectively model, team-teach, provide feedback, and coach to improve pedagogy with a particular focus on students who require learning assistance as well as work directly with students.

The Student Support Coordinator will lead implementation of this framework for the whole institution and work very closely with the designated lead in other schools in Kenya to oversee and support implementation of this framework.

Key Responsibilities

Design and facilitate/lead the implementation of an AKES, Kenya learning support program, assessment mechanisms, and appropriate pedagogies to include:

  • Identification – A system to identify children who require support and/or with learning needs using the school’s existing data as well as creating new processes as needed
  • Teacher Training – A comprehensive, planned approach to teacher training and support to promote differentiated teaching that supports the range of student abilities. These training modules should be grounded in international best practices and local contextual dynamics and practice
  • Student Support – A focus on individualized and group support to children with learning differences both within and withdrawn from classrooms
  • Target setting and Monitoring – A system for setting targets, monitoring, and tracking learning/progress using individual, class, and school-wide assessment tools including consideration of admissions and promotion policies
  • Individual Education Plans – a system for students with learning needs and high achievers which includes facilitating teacher and parent meetings, management of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and overall student advocacy
  • Intervention – Develop a system to identify and provide specific recommendations and interventions for addressing literacy and mathematics deficits
  • Gifted and Talented – A system to provide consultations and appropriate interventions and support for students identified as gifted and talented
  • Home-school Partnership – To inform, guide, and enable parents to support their child’s development
  • Technology – Keep up to date on developments as well as support implementation of assistive/adaptive technologies
  • Resources – develop a bank of physical and online resources aimed at supporting students, reinforcing and extending learning
  • Professional Development – Keep up to date on curriculum developments and trends in the field of learning disabilities and upskill staff as appropriate

The requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education / post-graduate degree in Education from an accredited university
  • At least 3 years school teaching experience
  • Experience with developing academic and behavioral support plans for students
  • Ability to engage with multiple stakeholders with good interpersonal skills
  • Good understanding of and experience in curriculum management, design, implementation and evaluation
  • Understanding of 21st Century education practices and strategies for raising students’ achievement
  • Experience in the developing world and Africa are highly desirable
  • Candidates currently in Kenya will require TSC registration
