Volunteer Pharmaceutical Technologist

Job Purpose/Objective

Under the guidance and supervision of the facility in charge, the pharmaceutical technologist will be involved in the day today management of the dispensing pharmacy operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the correct dispensing of pharmaceutical commodities at the dispensing pharmacy units.
  • Receiving complaints and reporting adverse drug reaction and receiving and reporting poor quality medicine and other HPTs.
  • Ensure there is adequate health supplies and drugs in the dispensing pharmacy stores, and that dispensing pharmacy is well managed with no pilferages.
  • Ensure all standard operating procedures within the supply chain are well implemented and adhered to.
  • Monitor prescribing trends by analyzing prescriptions and alerting the pharmacist of any anomalies or cases of irrational prescribing practices.
  • Ensure cold chain maintenance and monitoring is done regularly to ensure temperature sensitive drugs are correctly monitored while under storage.
  • Prepare all inventory management reports including MOH monthly reports for Malaria, TB, and HIV by 5th of every month.
  • Monitor and maintain the tracer drug list of commodities and report their availability to clinical team biweekly.
  • Attend departmental meetings as may be required from time to time.
  • Participate in the training and mentorship programs within the department unit where members learn from each other to improve the quality of services.
  • Carry out any other assignments that may be assigned to him/her by the supervisor or designate.

  • Accurate and timely documentation of all issued and received drugs and medical items.
  • Daily recording and tracking of temperatures in the cold room and the fridge.
  • Timely issuance of orders to the various units in the prescribed forms on their ordering days.

Required Qualifications.

  • Must have Kenya certificate of Education (KCSE) or an equivalent.
  • A Diploma in pharmacy from a recognized institution.
  • Be enrolled by the pharmacy and poisons board.
  • Served in the grade of pharmaceutical Technologist ii for at least one year.
  • Good communication and writing skills.
  • Certificate in computer application skills from a recognized institution.
  • A good team player Fluency in written and spoken English and Swahili Languages. Ability to work ethically in a demanding environment. Good customer care skills Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and result.

 

Volunteer Laboratory Technologist

Job Purpose/Objective

The laboratory technologist will actively contribute to the improvement of quality of care by ensuring quality laboratory services are delivered to the beneficiaries. He/she will be involved in capacity building of laboratory assistants through mentorship and on-bench training. He/She will be answerable to facility in charge.

Program Management

  • Perform Laboratory investigations as per clinician’s request and ensure accurate, reliable and timely results.
  • Maintain order and smooth flow of patients.
  • Participate in in-service training and regular on bench refresher courses for Kenyan and refugee staff.
  • Ensure that all relevant records are updated and maintained.
  • Monitor and ensure proper usage of laboratory reagents.
  • Maintain Laboratory machines in good order- cleaning and covering after use.
  • Ensure general laboratory cleanliness is maintained.
  • Report any unusual statistics or observations to the facility/Laboratory-in-charge.
  • Ensure SOPS are used at all times.
  • Ensuring safety standards and procedures in the laboratory are monitored and maintained.
  • Preparing of stains, reagents and solutions necessary for all lab tests.
  • Participate in the planning and forecasting of laboratory supplies in the department.
  • Timely submission of weekly, Monthly, and quarterly reports to Supervisor and MEAL team or other offices as may be indicated.
  • Keeping up to date with technical developments, especially those which can save time and improve reliability.
  • Countercheck all work done by incentive staff.
  • Ensure proper collection, packaging and transportation of laboratory samples to referral laboratories.
  • Ensure proper storage of laboratory reagents and cold chain system to avoid compromised reagents that may lead to false reporting.
  • Notify your supervisor of all investigations above the normal threshold.
  • Report any laboratory incidents to the facility and senior lab technologist.
  • Carry out any other duty assigned by your supervisor.

Volunteer Nutritionist

Job Purpose/Objective

Under direct supervision of the Facility in charge, the Volunteer Nutritionist will lead the implementation of all nutrition related activities at the IRC run health facilities and communities in the refugee settlement and the surrounding host communities in Kakuma refugee camp. S/he will be responsible for implementing integrated management of acute malnutrition including screening, providing treatment of acute malnutrition, documentation, and reporting. Key areas will include, but not limited to the detection and treatment of acute cases of malnutrition; implementation of MIYCN, IMAM surge, Family MUAC, Inpatient feeding, diet therapy, NACs for NCDs, supporting outreach activities that include surveillance and patient follow up; and preparing and submission of weekly and monthly reports; training of health and nutrition staff based at facility and community level.

Programming

  • Direct implementation of IMAM, ensuring management of all under-fives/PLWs enrolled in OTP/TSFP programs in line with the WHO, IMAM protocol.
  • Ensure in documentation/data entry in registers through EMR and compiling IMAM summary reports.
  • Manage nutrition commodities and food supplies at facility level/kitchen including receipt, inventory management, reporting and forecasting of commodity needs. Daily reconciliation of nutrition commodities with the pharmacy staff.
  • Ensure timely identification and treatment of acutely malnourished children and pregnant and lactating women by creating or strengthening nutrition surveillance and assessment systems at health facilities and community. Train and mentor staff -CHPs and other incentive staff on family MUAC approach.
  • Participate in daily ward rounds in the SC ward ensuring that all required observations, prescribed treatment, and procedure are properly carried out and documented in the patients’ cards in line with the national IMAM guidelines. Ensure all children under six months and their mothers are managed according to the MAMI protocol/IMAM guidelines.
  • Mentor the health and nutrition incentive staff to manage patients with acute malnutrition as per IMAM protocol.
  • Train and mentor IRC nutrition staff and other key stakeholders in GMP, MIYCN and IMAM, IMAM surge.
  • Submit weekly/monthly IMAM/HIS/MIYCN/LMIS reports to the MEAL department for uploading/entry into DHIS
  • Ensure integration of nutrition services with health- ensure provision of quality nutrition assessment, counselling and supports in NCD clinics, MCH/OPD, Medical wards and Special clinics (POPC, LBW/Preterm).
  • Together with community health, plan and conduct continuous monitoring of patients enrolled in nutrition programs through home visits.
  • Participate in program strategic planning and roll-out of new program areas in liaison with key stakeholders and cooperating partners.
  • Participate in nutrition assessments-KAP/SENS surveys, global and national global events and activities-WBW, Malezi bora campaign.
  • Identify training gaps for the incentive staff and beneficiaries within nutrition program and communicate the same to the senior nutrition officer.
  • Implement MIYCN at facility and community levels and integrating with CMAM programs through group and individual counselling sessions, health education sessions.
  • Support the nutrition officer in the development of quarterly wok plans for the activities to be implemented.

Required Qualifications

  • Hold a Diploma in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics from a recognized College/University.
  • MUST have registration certificate and valid license with KNDI
  • S/he must possess ability to analyse and interpret both quantitative and qualitative programmed data.
  • Must possess excellent planning and organizational skills. – Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must have cognate skills in computer applications.
  • MUST possess a high level of integrity and with good interpersonal skills – Ready to work in difficult environmental conditions.

Experience/Competence

  • Possess at least 1 years’ experience in implementing nutrition related activities in a health facility and or community set up.
  • Training and expertise in IMAM and MIYCN.
  • Expertise in MAMI, and IMAM surge is an added advantage.
  • Strong communication skills, oral, written and presentation.
  • Previous experience in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands of Kenya
  • Previous experience working in insecure contexts
  • Extremely flexible and can cope with stressful situations. –

Volunteer Nurse

Job Purpose/Objective

To provide holistic nursing services to both inpatient and out patients within the hospital.

Key Responsibilities

The volunteer nurse is directly responsible to the nursing officer in charge and will carry out the following duties:

Programming

  • The clinical nurse shall work in specific ward/clinic as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Prepare for and assist the doctors during the rounds and whenever required.
  • Ensure that all required observations, prescribed treatment and procedures are properly carried out and documented on patient’s charts.
  • Refer to the doctor in charge or to the doctor/CO on call relevant information such as patient’s status and laboratory results, which would assist in proper clinical management.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living while in the ward.
  • Arrange and submit weekly ward work schedule and plan daily duties and responsibilities for each refugee staff.
  • Convene ward meeting and attend monthly hospital meetings.
  • Escort patient to other referral hospital when necessary.
  • Do hospital coverage and on-call as required.
  • Participate in camp health surveys/campaigns.

Reporting and communication

  • Compile and submit quarterly inventory return/requisition of all drugs and supplies.
  • Conduct regular training session for refugee staff on basic nursing care/management of various ward cases and charting.
  • Give health education to patients and clients
  • Compile and submit monthly reports.
  • Monitor and supervise proper usage of supplies.

Operations

  • Maintain equipments in good condition and submit regular inventory report of the same.
  • Maintain drug registers and drug consumption within the ward level.
  • Ensure that all admissions, discharges, transfers and deaths are properly recorded as they occur.
  • Report any significant changes in operations to the Nursing officer in charge.
  • Carry out any other additional duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Assessment, Planning, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation of nursing care services and other related activities within the allocated unit/ward.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse from KMTC or recognized nurse training institution or Bachelors degree in nursing from a recognized university
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Fresh graduate from nursing training institution/KMTC or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Straight out of internship.

Volunteer Radio/Sonographer

Job purpose/Objectives

Under direct supervision of Radiology in charge Volunteer/Locum Radiographer will be responsible for production of high-quality diagnostic Images that will help in diagnosing various patients’ conditions and aid in timely treatments/interventions. He/ She will supervise, direct and capacity build all Radiology incentive staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a range of Radiographic/sonographic examinations as requested according to the requirements of the referring physician, provide diagnostic radiographs, perform ultrasound and Doppler examinations by capturing images of diagnostic value.
  • To be able to communicate critical results to referring doctors.
  • Presenting the sonograms and preliminary findings to the Physicians.
  • Receiving patients for various Radiological procedures and exercising a high degree of patient care by explaining the procedure to patients and answering any questions they may have.
  • Maintaining the ultrasound and X ray equipment and maintaining the room in which the procedure takes place.
  • Monitoring and caring for patients to ensure their safety and comfort during the procedures.
  • Ensuring clear images for diagnostic purposes and making adjustments to the sonographic equipment when necessary.
  • Assessing patients and interpreting clinical requirements to determine appropriate radiographic technique.
  • Enabling high quality patient experience including quality of care and optimal turnaround time.
  • Producing images of high diagnostic quality.
  • Be able to advise patients/clients accordingly.
  • Ensure radiation protections measures are adhered to
  • Participating in hospital meetings and training
  • Monitor and supervise radiological supplies ensuring proper usage
