Job Description

Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Administrative Assistant – Isiolo

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all project supplies for PBIDS supported activities in Isiolo.
  • Work with the field team leads to request and make follow-up on procurement of goods and services. S/he must ascertain goods and services are delivered on time, with stated specification, standard and verify invoices against goods delivered.
  • Ensure frequent update of stock database to show both stock-in and out.
  • Assist in verification of invoices and bills from the field office before payments are made.
  • Participate in preparation of budget on project supplies, workshops and conferences, study participants’ reimbursements and request on transport.
  • Document project vehicle mileage, track and update reports on vehicle maintenance
  • Participate in project meetings, prepare the relevant correspondence for the field teams
  • Ensure day-to-day smooth operations of administrative functions of the department.
  • Undertake other duties as may be assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Clerk (Community Interviewer) – Isiolo

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in identification and registration of potential participants
  • Ensure consistent implementation of the research protocol over time
  • Schedule participants for follow-ups
  • Complete study forms accurately & completely
  • Ensure s/he has the requisite supplies in good time
  • Ensure specimens for transfer to the County laboratory are properly tracked and transported in a timely manner
  • Work closely with the entire research team to resolve problems/queries
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive research information
  • Participate in monthly program meetings
  • Must be able to relate well with MOH staff and CHVs and the community
  • Perform any other duties assigned/delegated by the study management.

Registered Nurse – Eremet, Isiolo County

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the surveillance protocol for successful implementation and execution of the study;
  • Provide basic triage and offer treatment to study participants;
  • Consent and collect surveillance data using provided tools;
  • Collect surveillance specimens and perform malaria rapid diagnostic tests on study participants as appropriate;
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and participants’ privacy;
  • Maintain adequate amounts of required medical supplies;
  • Participate in the review and development of study SOPs; and
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the study management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Document all aspects of patient care and maintain accurate and complete medical records
  • Developing an in-depth understanding of the study design and goals
  • Seeing patients and performing physical exams in outpatient departments
  • Accurately and completely filling case report forms
  • Making diagnoses and decisions on how to manage patients according to prevailing ministry of health protocols
  • Assist in collection and processing of surveillance samples
  • Report problems encountered in the field to the Study Coordinator
  • Being flexible to work within the existing structures and rules of the health facility

Laboratory Analyst – Nairobi

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receiving/collecting, labeling and registering patients’ specimens.
  • Proper sample reception and processing including culture, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing and recording results.
  • Media preparation, QC and packaging samples for shipment to other labs.
  • Participate in developing assays, equipment SOP development and laboratory waste autoclaving.
  • Perform data entry from preanalytical, analytical and post analytical processes
  • Supervising the disinfection, washing and sterilization of apparatus; and
  • Participation in IQC and EQA Pannel testing
  • Maintenance of equipment, supplies inventory, reagents and lab records

Vacancy Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following fields; Medical Laboratory Sciences Laboratory Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Sciences/Biology, Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Technology or Biotechnology or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.    Mandatory

Assistant Laboratory Technologist – Kisumu

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform helminth diagnosis using standard techniques including Kato-Katz, lateral flow assays (POC-CCA, SCH-RDT-CAA);
  • Examine specimens to conduct tests or generate results for analysis;
  • Capture of point-of-care test results into mobile Health platform;
  • Prepare laboratory reagents to ensure quality control and smooth running of the laboratory;
  • Collect, sort, identify and process laboratory samples to ensure final quality results;
  • Carry out laboratory inventory management such as laboratory samples and equipment to ensure records are up to date, proper use, for accountability and tracking;
  • Enter and validate laboratory results for the purpose of backup of research records and for future reference;
  • Dispatch results to researchers and clients for further analysis and diagnosis;
  • Routine and daily maintenance of laboratory equipment;
  • Taking part in preparation of Standards Operations Procedures (SOPs).
