Job Description

Ecosystem Technical Specialist

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, within the Biodiversity, People and Landscapes Unit, the individual contractor will support UNEP’s effective and efficient engagement the finalization of the SAMPeat project document, the planning, coordination, and delivery of key meetings and events related to the GPI Phase II project including direct support and engagement with Peru and Colombia.
  • Responsibilities will include: Support the update and validation of the UNEP components of the SAMPeat project, including through desk research, engagement with consortium.
  • Tasks will include: Coordinating and accompanying the consortium partners for meetings including field visits. b. Engaging with government institutions, stakeholders and GPI partners to refine UNEP’s workpackage(s) in the SAMPeat full project proposal, in line with our comparative advantage and role as lead of the Global Peatlands Initiative.
  • Support the preparations and delivery of the GPI Partners Meeting and field visit with the Peru Government and in collaboration with GPI partners (e.g., speaker invitations, finalization and translation of agendas, meeting documents, summaries).
  • Tasks will include: Stakeholder and Partner Collaboration: Coordinate with Peruvian government agencies (e.g., MINAM, SERNANP, IIAP), Colombian government representatives and international partners for the successful delivery of the GPI Partners Meeting and related events.
  • Participant Engagement and Accessibility: Ensure high attendance of relevant participants through leveraging UNEP and partner networks. Ensure accessibility and smooth participation for attendees from diverse sectors and countries, with consideration of gender aspects and geographical balance.
  • Manage all aspects of speaker engagement, including preparation, logistics, briefing materials, and post-event follow-up. Develop moderator guides and session scripts to ensure coherent and impactful delivery.
  • Content Development and Outreach: Produce outreach materials and support the design of event agendas, including thematic sessions. Collaborate with the GPI Coordinator to develop a curtain raiser for UNEP, which may include opening and closing remarks, moderation guides for panel discussions sessions, talking points for UNEP officials and GPI partners. e
  • Support positioning of UNEP speakers in media engagements, press conferences, and strategic platforms.
  • Support the organization and delivery of other key events, including the Peatland Breakthrough launch event, and the Venice Agreement annual meeting.
  • Support the development of project concepts for funding for Peru and Colombia and with initial emphasis in South American Mountain and Patagonia Peatland project countries.

Qualifications/special skills

  • Qualifications: An advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in biology, ecology or a closely related field is required. A first-level university degree, combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. Work experience (requirements and desirables):
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional work experience at the international level on environmental topics related to peatlands ecosystems and/or nature-based solutions is required.
  •  Experience in planning large national or international meetings and events, including substance and logistics, is required.
  • Experience in technical science writing for meeting and outreach materials, including presentations, briefing notes, substantive background documents and other information products is required.
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Word, Power Point, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision and with tight deadlines is required.

 

Expert for Conducting ODS Banks of Unwanted ODS

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop an Inception Work Plan and Methodological Framework
  • Prepare a detailed work plan outlining timelines, milestones, country engagement strategies, and deliverables for the consultancy.
  • Develop a project implementation checklist to guide the execution and monitoring of the assignment. o Present the inception plan to UNEP and NOUs for validation and refinement.
  • Design Data Collection Tools and Methodology
  • In consultation with UNEP and the NOUs, design a standardized questionnaire and data collection template tailored to national contexts while ensuring regional comparability.
  • Define key data parameters, including the types, quantities, and sources of used or unwanted controlled substances, storage conditions, and existing management practices.
  • Establish criteria for identifying and categorizing banks of used or unwanted controlled substances.
  • Ensure that the tools incorporate provisions for gender responsive, environmentally sound, and safe data collection procedures.

Qualifications/special skills

  • An advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in engineering or environmental science or related area is required. A first-level university degree, combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in engineering, environmental science, chemistry, or a related technical field is required. Experience should demonstrate the ability to manage and implement complex technical or environmental projects involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience in data collection, verification, and management at the national or regional level, particularly in relation to chemicals management, refrigerant inventories, or waste management, is required.
  • Proven ability to design and implement surveys, analyze data, and prepare technical reports is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with or supporting National Ozone Units (NOUs), government ministries, or international organizations in the field of environmental protection or sustainable development is desirable. Familiarity with UNEP project management procedures and international reporting standards would be considered an advantage.

 

Expert for Conducting ODS Banks of Unwanted ODS Survey

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop an Inception Work Plan and Methodological Framework
  • Prepare a detailed work plan outlining timelines, milestones, country engagement strategies, and deliverables for the consultancy.
  • Develop a project implementation checklist to guide the execution and monitoring of the assignment.
  • Present the inception plan to UNEP and NOUs for validation and refinement.
  • Design Data Collection Tools and Methodology
  • In consultation with UNEP and the NOUs, design a standardized questionnaire and data collection template tailored to national contexts while ensuring regional comparability.
  • Define key data parameters, including the types, quantities, and sources of used or unwanted controlled substances, storage conditions, and existing management practices.
  • Establish criteria for identifying and categorizing banks of used or unwanted controlled substances.
  • Ensure that the tools incorporate provisions for gender responsive, environmentally sound, and safe data collection procedures.
  • Coordinate and Oversee National Surveys o Work closely with each NOU to plan and implement the nationwide survey in the seven countries.
  • Provide in-country technical guidance and oversight to national teams conducting data collection.
  • Ensure adherence to agreed methodologies, data quality standards, and ethical considerations

Qualifications/special skills

  • Master’s degree in engineering or environmental science or related area is required
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in engineering, environmental science, or related field is required
  • Knowledge of technical issues of ozone depleting substances, experience in the implementation of Montreal Protocol activities and experience in data collection, review and management at the national level regarding HCFCs or related substances is an added advantage.

 

Digital Marketing & Communications Specialist

The incumbent will perform the following functions:

  • Plan, execute, and manage paid digital marketing strategies to support UNEP’s communication objectives and enhance the reach and impact of its work, applying data-driven approaches to improve performance, audience targeting, and cost effectiveness.
  • Track and analyze the performance of digital marketing and communication activities, prepare analytical reports, and provide recommendations to strengthen future initiatives.
  • Coordinate with internal UNEP teams and external service providers to support the effective delivery of digital marketing and communication activities.
  • Coordinate the planning and implementation of communication activities for assigned programmes or initiatives, including Young Champions of the Earth, by liaising with internal teams and external partners to ensure strategic alignment, consistency of messaging, and effective delivery across digital and multimedia platforms.

Qualifications/special skills

  • A master’s degree in communications, marketing, or a related field is required. A Bachelor’s degree in combination with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the Master’s degree.
  • At least 1 year of relevant professional experience in digital marketing and digital communications, including management of paid digital campaigns and multi-channel communication initiatives, is required.
  • Proven experience in coordinating communication activities for programmes or initiatives, working with multiple stakeholders is required Experience running creative workshops and administering newsletters using MDirector or a similar software is required
  • Previous experience with the United Nations or an international organization is desirable.

 

National Environmental Law Expert

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Carry out a baseline mapping and analysis of the policy, legislative (laws, decrees, and regulations) and institutional framework governing climate change in Seychelles, with specific reference to agreed national priority sectors, identifying existing strengths, gaps, and challenges within this governance framework.
  • The analysis should include an assessment of legislative provisions for subnational governance structures (District Administrative Offices), including their current mandates and responsibilities related to local climate action and risk management.
  • Based on the above analysis, develop a report on key findings and recommendations for strengthening legislative and institutional frameworks for climate change, in collaboration with UNEP and the Government of Seychelles.
  • Provide technical legal support to the Government of Seychelles in the organisation and execution of stakeholder consultations. Integrate feedback of stakeholder consultations into the report on key findings and recommendations as appropriate, in collaboration with the Government of Seychelles and UNEP.
  • Building on the report on key findings and recommendations for strengthening legislative and institutional frameworks, prepare draft legislative provisions with a view to implementing the recommendations, in collaboration with relevant government stakeholders and UNEP.
  • Develop and execute tailored training workshops for targeted government agencies identified above on key climate change responsibilities under national law and best practices for national climate change governance.
  • Participate in regular meetings with the Government of Seychelles on project activities and progress and contribute as requested.
  • Communicate periodically with UNEP focal points to update on progress and milestones.

Qualifications/special skills

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, environmental law and/or administrative law, preferably with a focus on climate change and agriculture is required. A first-level university degree with additional 2 years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in environmental law and climate change is required. Proven experience in reviewing legal and policy frameworks and drafting recommendations is required. Experience working in Seychelles or comparable African Small Island Developing States (SIDS) contexts is required.
  • Excellent legal research, writing and communication skills in both English and French are required.
  • Strong analytical and policy drafting skills, particularly in climate change and agriculture sectors are required.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with government institutions and stakeholders is required.
