Post-Doctoral Fellow- Economist
AFIDEP is looking for an economist as a Post-Doctoral Fellow to join our research and policy teams to contribute to accelerating development progress in Africa through evidence generation and translation, and capacity development. The successful candidate will undertake different types of economic analyses and modelling on various development policy and programmatic issues that AFIDEP works on. Immediate work will focus on economic analyses and modelling to inform policy and regulatory reforms that Africa needs to leverage the ongoing demographic transition, the 4th industrial revolution, and the evolving digital economy, to create meaningful and dignified employment for youth. The ideal candidate must have a PhD in Economics, and at least 2 years of relevant research experience. The position is based at AFIDEP’s Nairobi office.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Take part in the conceptualization, design and implementation of research, capacity strengthening, and policy engagement programmes.
- Design and conduct different types of economic analyses and modelling on various development policy and programmatic issues that AFIDEP works on to generate critical insights for informing policy and programmatic reforms.
- Design and conduct systematic reviews of existing research and analysis of existing data to generate critical insights for informing policy and programmatic reforms.
- Write different types of publications to present research results including scientific journal papers, research reports, policy briefs, and blogs.
- Organise policy dialogues with relevant government officials and other stakeholders at regional and national levels to research findings to facilitate their uptake in policy decision-making
- Conduct capacity development activities to strengthen the generation and use of research and other types of evidence in decision-making.
- Establish and manage critical partnerships with relevant government agencies and other stakeholders to ensure ownership and support for the research work you are involved in.
- Contribute to proposal writing and fundraising.
Qualifications and Requirements
- PhD in Economics.
- At least two (2) years’ post-doctoral research experience in economic analyses and modelling.
- Experience in the management and coordination of research programmes and partnerships, and monitoring and evaluation of programmes.
- Strong and hands-on quantitative research approaches, methods, and analytical skills.
- Experience in multidisciplinary approaches to research aimed at results for sustainable development.
- Excellent writing skills, including policy-oriented reports and scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals (must have some published some scientific peer-reviewed journal papers)

Projects Administrative Officer
AFIDEP is looking for an experienced professional to fill in the position of Projects Administrative Officer, based in AFIDEP’s Nairobi office. Reporting to the Director of Public Policy & Knowledge Translation, the role entails providing support including administration, monitoring project budgets and tracking project implementation, and coordination of project team meetings, under the office of the Director, in a bid to enhance efficiency and service delivery to the Director, as well as internal and external clients. The holder of this role will be effective at planning, coordination, communication, and monitoring in their work, and should be able to work well under pressure.
Key Accountabilities
Projects Management and Administration
- Track the implementation of all projects under the Director’s leadership and provide early alerts on implementation challenges.
- Identify synergies between projects to maximise efficiencies in time and cost.
- Create and maintain a database of all project documents.
- Liaise with Finance to monitor project budgets and provide quarterly reports of burn rate.
- Maintain project calendars, coordinate meetings, and follow-up on actions points.
- In consultation with project managers and project coordinators, prepare consolidated monthly reports on the projects and PowerPoint presentations as required.
Administrative support to the Director’s office
- Work closely and effectively with the Director to keep them well informed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities, following up appropriately.
- Manage an extremely active calendar of appointments; assist in composing correspondence.
- Make project travel arrangements as and when required; compile documents for meetings; complete travel expense reports.
- Provide technical and administrative support for the Director’s effective contribution to Board functions and meetings, as well as, to the Senior Management Team functions and meetings.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Masters’ degree in social sciences or development studies with at least 3 years’ work experience in a project officer role, or project management.
- Project management training, with hands-on skills and experience in using project management software.
- Practical hands-on experience in project management in an international organization implementing multiple projects.
- Budget tracking ability.
- Proficient user of MS Office (particularly Excel and PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of best practices and industry standards for project management.

The ideal candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in either Economics, or Political Science, or Public Policy and Administration, or Development Studies. Candidates currently undertaking Master’s degree studies will be preferred. - At least three years’ experience in research and advocacy on gender and development.
- Demonstrated knowledge of key concepts/issues relating to gender and macroeconomic policy.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and quantitative skills, including attention to detail and experience in modeling using relevant statistical softwares.
- Strong communication skills, including preparation and delivery of compelling technical presentations, reports and other documents.
- Effective interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to build strong professional relationships with a range of stakeholders, and excellent organizational skills.
- Proven ability to coordinate and manage multi-stakeholder and multi-country research projects and timelines.
- Ability to work independently, set priorities, and handle multiple tasks concurrently.
