Job Description

Established in 1952, the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu is part of the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS). It is a 61-bed acute care facility managed by qualified professionals who include experienced, full-time resident doctors and consultants.

Cath Lab Nurses

The Cath Lab Nurse will operate and monitor sophisticated life support equipment in the Cath Lab, while demonstrating leadership, management skills, and a high level of expertise in current Cath Lab practices.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Assist with diagnostic and interventional procedures being carried out in the Cath Lab as a scrub nurse, circulating nurse hemodynamic monitoring nurse (Recorder).
  • Recognize and implement nursing intervention for managing contrast/anaphylactic reaction
  • Performs assessment and planning of care needs, the implementation and evaluation of a program of care that is evidence based and ensures involvement with the patient, family and carer
  • Actively participate in the multi-disciplinary on-call team working in the Cath Lab or across hospital site, responding to out of hours cardiac emergencies including Primary PCI procedures for the treatment of Myocardial Infarction.
  • Assess patients for early signs of post procedural complications and act upon findings.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels in the Cath Lab, ensuring proper utilization of medical supplies and readiness for all scheduled procedures.
  • Schedule Cath Lab bookings to ensure timely operations, managing the availability of all necessary equipment and coordinating the schedule for efficient patient flow.
  • Uphold infection control measures during all phases of patient care, ensuring compliance with aseptic techniques and promoting patient safety at all times.

The requirements

  • Higher Diploma qualification in Critical Care, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Specialized training in Cardiac Nursing or related certifications may be an advantage.
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • A valid practicing license.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory setting or similar unit.
  • Strong commitment to high standards of patient care.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Compassionate and empathetic towards patients.

 

Cath Lab Nurse Specialist

Reporting to the Head of Nursing, the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring and maintaining quality, safe clinical nursing practices, participating in quality improvement activities, and managing both operational and human resource issues within the unit.

Key Responsibilities  

  • Mentor staff to assist with diagnostic and interventional procedures being carried out in the Cath Lab as a scrub nurse, circulating nurse hemodynamic monitoring nurse (Recorder).
  • Regularly review and ensure that patient documentation is complete and meets the required standards (e.g., initial assessments, reassessments, nursing notes, intake & output).
  • Plan and prioritize nursing care based on identified patient needs and evaluate clinical outcomes.
  • Deliver safe, evidence-based care to patients in compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Provide guidance and support to nursing staff on performance issues and assist with remedial activities as necessary.
  • Monitor inventory management of equipment, drugs, forms, and supplies, and ensure follow-up on any related requests or complaints.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with clinicians and support services to ensure the timely delivery of patient care.
  • Monitor clinical indicators and take corrective action as required to improve patient outcomes.
  • Actively participate in Mortality and Morbidity meetings and follow up on recommendations for patient care improvement.
  • Ensure proper charging of services with the unit clerk, where applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional mandates related to quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical audits.

The requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Specialized training or certification in Cardiac Care will be an added advantage.
  • Registered Nurse with current nursing licensure.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Critical Care Unit, with at least 2 years of experience in a Cath Lab setting or similar unit.
  • Strong commitment to high standards of patient care.
  • Ability to manage and lead nursing staff in a clinical setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Manager – Obstetrics & Gyneacology Services

Reporting to the Head of Nursing, the successful candidate will support the Obs & Gyn department activities in the Hospital through systematic analysis of health data, develop standard guidelines in the Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate programme goals and objectives in collaboration with Program Chairs and Clinical leads drawing from the overall institutional strategy.
  • Prepare annual operational, capital and staff budgets.
  • Lead the team in quality improvement initiatives to ensure delivery of safe and quality care.
  • Maintain a database of the key performance indicators and communicates variances in a timely manner.
  • Develop and reviews departmental policies.
  • Monitor quality of patient care through defined clinical and service indicators
  • Facilitate and attends relevant Mortality and Morbidity meetings and ensures that active follow-up is done with the recommendations and conclusions.
  • Support departments in identification of Continuous Quality Improvement projects (CQI)
  • Take lead in implementation of evidence-based interventions through clinical pathways and protocols.
  • Lead in enhancing revenue generation through development of new services and expansion of existing ones with cost containment initiatives.
  • Oversee delivery of customer service excellence by monitoring customer satisfaction.

The requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Diploma in Midwifery will be an added advantage or five (5) years of experience as a Manager in the Maternity Unit.
  • Basic Life Support /Advanced Cardiac Life Support /Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics certificate and other unit specific certification requirements.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in an acute care setting.
  • Valid practicing license with the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Working knowledge of a Hospital Management Information System.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, administrative & customer care skills.

 

Manager – Medical Services

Reporting to the Head of Nursing, the successful candidate will support the medicine department activities in the Hospital through systematic analysis of health data, develop standard guidelines in the Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

Prevention & Control Of Infection Coordinator

Reporting to the Head of Nursing, the successful candidate will support the activities of the prevention, control and infection program in the Hospital through systematic analysis of health data, develop standard guidelines on infection control and investigate and report infection control problems.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Conduct regular rounds in all hospital departments to discuss, monitor and follow the infection control practices with staff personnel.
  • Collect data on healthcare associated infections from all hospital departments and maintain records for each case.
  • Monitor compliance to infection prevention and control practices in all areas of the hospital.
  • Lead in development of policies and guidelines to guide infection control practices in all areas of the hospital.
  • Provide oversight of compliance with infection prevention and control practices in the outreach centers.
  • Coordinate with the hospital leadership regarding priorities, resources and quality improvement related to the infection prevention and control program.
  • Ensure a systematical collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data to plan, implement, evaluate, and disseminate appropriate health practices.
  • Investigate infection control problems/outbreaks and arrange follow-up care for patients exposed to infectious diseases.
  • Implement educational programs to provide staff with knowledge and skills regarding infection control practices and preventive measures to provide a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Ensure availability of supplies/equipment needed to prevent infections.
  • Prepare monthly statistical report for presentation on behalf of infection control committee.
  • Report hospital infection outbreaks to the Chair and Prevention and Control of Infection Committee members.
  • Report any ‘reportable’ disease to the local government public health authorities.
  • Collaborate with Occupational Health & Safety Unit to ensure employee vaccinations are up to date.

The requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Public Health, Epidemiology, or other related field from a recognized Institution.
  • At least five (5) years’ work experience in an acute care setting, with two (2) years’ experience as a Prevention & Control of Infection Coordinator.
  • Valid practicing license with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, administrative & customer care skills.
