Principal Banker

Purpose of Job

The Principal Banker is competent in undertaking all tasks related to, and understands all aspects of, project development and implementation, including project origination, structuring, execution, implementation and monitoring, for all types of investment instruments offered by the Bank.

The Principal Banker will act as a senior member of the Resident Office, and in the context of a project team, as a senior member or as an operation leader.

The Principal Banker, in their role as an operation leader, is expected to take responsibility for effective leadership of their project team/s, supervision of junior banking staff, while contributing to their coaching and providing mentoring assistance, as required.

The Principal Banker’s role also includes elements of business/pipeline development, client management and policy dialogue.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

Structuring and Execution

  • Work as a senior project team member, including with more experienced operation leaders, on complex transactions, contributing to all aspects of project structuring and execution, including management of the project team and supporting the operation leader (when applicable) with management of the project team;

As an operation leader:

  • Lead structuring, negotiation (including review of legal documentation) and the execution of transactions, working with clients, authorities, consultants and internal units;
  • Manage the resources and the workload of the project teams under their supervision;
  • Oversee the project due diligence process ensuring it meets the Bank’s standards;
  • Ensure quality and appropriateness of TC assistance components which support the investments or contribute to policy dialogue initiatives;
  • Ensure that all transactions within their responsibility are completed within the specified time frames to a high standard (including all internal memoranda and Board reports) and in line with the policies, procedures and objectives of the Bank.

Portfolio Monitoring, Value Creation and Reporting

  • As a senior project team member perform all such tasks as may be assigned by the operation leader (if applicable) and provide constructive portfolio monitoring advice, guidance and supervision to more junior members of the project team.

As operation leader:

  • Take overall responsibility for the effective monitoring of all projects within their responsibility, including verifying the quality of regular monitoring reports; taking the lead in maintaining or supervising the management of client relationships; actively managing the resolution of any implementation/monitoring issues in cooperation with relevant Portfolio Managers; managing and supervising more junior bankers who assist in portfolio monitoring;
  • Supervise implementation and monitoring of, and reporting on, relevant TC assignments to ensure their compliance with donor reporting requirements, operational objectives and that all reports are of a high quality;
  • Take responsibility for ensuring timely notification of any critical portfolio issues to the relevant Portfolio Manager and/or Management, ensuring availability of adequate data and information for the Portfolio Manager and/or Management to be able to take timely decisions.

Policy Dialogue

  • In cooperation with relevant units within the Bank (e.g., Policy Vice Presidency) and Banking sector teams (if applicable), contribute to policy dialogue, in a leading role (project level initiatives) or supporting function (national level initiatives);
  • Assist in providing necessary support, in the form of relevant information or documentation or meeting participation, towards efforts to procure grants and technical cooperation funds to complement investment projects or required as part of policy dialogue efforts.

Business Development

  • Assist and lead (when appropriate) with marketing and business development efforts in the relevant sector and countries to build reputable market contacts in order to develop a broad deal flow and cross selling of the Bank’s competencies;
  • Assist and lead (when appropriate) with the critical screening of project proposal flow that is generated through business development efforts, liaising with other colleagues and teams within the Bank to identify sound and executable investments that meet the mandate of the Bank.

Staff Management

  • Assist in recruiting, training, coaching and mentoring junior bankers, in coordination with the team Director and Associate Directors, Senior Bankers, involving them in all aspects of the project cycle (appraisal, execution, implementation, monitoring and business development), ensuring adequate quality of project work and appropriate workload distribution amongst the project team members; contribute to their professional and competency development;
  • Develop productive relationships within the organisation to able to work effectively in a country/sector matrix structure and in a multi-cultural working environment.
  • Directly accountable for the engagement and effective overall management of the Team including recruitment, compensation, performance management, coaching and development. Where matrix reporting is in place, work jointly with the country counterpart when setting objectives and completing performance appraisals for relevant staff.
  • Champion and role model the Bank’s Behavioural Competencies and Corporate Behaviours, ensuring adherence within the team(s) so that the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct are exhibited at all times.

The responsibilities of the Principal Banker are designed to allow for the development of transaction expertise and expansion of responsibilities, leading to assuming the role of Senior Banker.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree.  Master’s degree preferred or equivalent experience in the areas of expertise.
  • Professional qualification such as ACA, CFA, ACCA, or CIMA desirable.
  • Strong quantitative/numerical skills are critical with the ability to interpret financial information and to design and use financial models.
  • Credit analysis skills, with the ability to interpret accounts, understanding local and international accounting principles and practice of credit analysis.
  • Computer literacy, conversant with Microsoft Office and spread sheet packages including financial analysis and modelling modules.
  • Excellent understanding of relevant systems and processes.
  • Stakeholder management skills.
  • Coaching, mentoring & leadership skills.
  • Relationship management and negotiation skills.

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Significant relevant financial industry experience from a development finance institution, an investment or commercial bank, private equity firm, asset management firm, or international auditing/financial consulting firm.
  • Practical experience of participating in and leading complex transactions through the full project life cycle.
  • Relevant country experience is highly desirable, including in-depth understanding of country/regional dynamics and trends.

 

Assistant Banking, (RO)

Purpose of Job

The Assistant provides administrative support to staff, including travel arrangements and secretarial assistance in project preparation. The EBRD is extending the geographic scope of the Bank’s operations to several sub-Saharan African countries and it is in the process of opening a Resident Office (RO) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Assistant provides comprehensive high quality secretarial support to staff from various teams represented in RO and also works in cooperation with service providers (travel agencies, courier companies, etc.)

Accountabilities & Resonsiblities 

  • Screen telephone calls, taking messages and passing them on as appropriate, providing a professional front of house service.
  • Manage the diaries of the Bankers if required to assist with the smooth running of the office and key stakeholder’s schedules.
  • Proofread and draft routine business correspondence for Banker’s signature, editing, photocopying, scanning and binding documents;
  • Organising conference calls, video conferences, external and internal meetings.
  • Travel arrangements for various business trips including visas arrangements and following up reimbursement process.
  • Providing administrative support in project preparation/ due diligence/ monitoring: updating projects databases and filing project documents, preparation of contract request forms etc.
  • Assist in the organisation of workshops and seminars, preparing presentations for internal and external meetings.
  • Working and supporting visiting missions to the RO.
  • Cover the reception area as/when required
  • Ad-hoc other secretarial and administrative duties when required.

Analyst Banker

Purpose of Job

The Analyst Banker contributes to all phases of the project cycle, including project origination, structuring, execution, implementation, and monitoring. The Analyst Banker will take responsibility for the tasks assigned to them by the operation leader or more senior members of the project team, or more senior bankers, which may include undertaking comprehensive due diligence, including financial, market, integrity and EBRD policy compliance, as well as effective post-signing implementation and monitoring.

The Analyst Banker carries out these tasks as part of a project team under the guidance of the operation leader or under the supervision/guidance of more senior bankers

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the operation leader or a more senior banker:

Structuring and Execution

  • Work as a project team member on transactions, contributing to all aspects of project structuring and execution, including comprehensive research and analysis of background materials, market information and financial performance data; analyse and evaluate potential risks related to the proposed project, including analysis of financial statements, preparing and updating financial models and financial projections;
  • Assist with the designing and processing of technical co-operation assistance, including preparation of terms of reference and internal approval documentation, to support the related investment project or the related policy dialogue initiative;
  • As may be requested, assist with communication with other internal units of the Bank, clients and other stakeholders, at the operational level, such as preparing draft correspondence, presentations, and following up on internal emails;
  • Ensure that all tasks assigned to the Analyst are completed within the specified time frames to a high quality and in line with the policies, procedures and objectives of the Bank.

Portfolio Monitoring, Value Creation and Reporting

  • As requested by the operation leader or a Portfolio Manager, undertake assigned tasks relating to the implementation and monitoring of projects to which the Analyst Banker is assigned as part of the project team, including compliance with project agreements and Bank procedures related to disbursement, monitoring of progress of the project and financial performance of the client, assessing evolving risk factors and monitoring and assessing covenant compliance;
  • As requested by the operation leader or more senior member of the project team, prepare timely and comprehensive draft monitoring reports and include recommendations for corrective actions where required and ensure these corrective actions and recommendations are brought to the attention of more senior team members;
  • As may be requested by, and under the supervision of, a TC operation leader, assist with the effective implementation and monitoring of TC assignments including communication with TC client, monitoring of TC fund usage, preparation and filing of relevant TC progress and completion reports to support the TC operation leader to meet donor reporting requirements and operational objectives.

The responsibilities of the Analyst Banker are designed to allow the Analyst Banker to progressively undertake more complex tasks and build the scope of responsibilities based on acquired experience and expertise.

Office Manager

Purpose of Job

The Office Manager (OM), is responsible for effective implementation of administrative procedures and processes, ensuring that the Resident Office (RO) provides an efficient and well managed working environment for the staff and visitors. The OM, interfaces with counterparts and management within the Banking Department and other relevant departments.

The role may also provide administrative assistance to the Head of Office, and/or RO based banker(s).

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

Office set up

  • Support the Establishment of a new office in Kenya, including all relevant coordination with local authorities and EBRD HQ teams.
  • Working closely with the Head of Office, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the local authorities and government bodies, mainly, Ministry of Finance and Foreign Office, Tax Authorities, in order to address any EBRD status related issue, visa/accreditation/VAT issues

Administration, Property and Office Management

  • Co-ordinate regular maintenance of the office: office inventory; office supplies and equipment, and vehicles.
  • Liaise with the landlord in conjunction with the Head of Office and Administrative Services over lease, office moves, refurbishment and regular maintenance issues.
  • Coordinate any RO security and medical issues with the Head of Health and Safety Unit, HQ.
  • Together with the relevant HQ units and Head of RO, procure and manage purchases and disposals; manage service contracts, insurance policies, utilities etc.
  • Coordinate external providers to ensure good quality work in a timely manner.
  • Act as HR co-ordinator: make arrangements for the registration process with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accreditation issues of the non-local staff and their families; sick leave records, updating of contacts for medical insurances; recording sickness records and reporting to HR as appropriate.
  • Act as IT co-ordinator: arrange workstations (desks, PCs, desk phones) for RO newcomers, desks allocation for RO visitors provide assistance to RO and visiting staff; coordinate with HQ IT department and RO IT specialists located in region, assist staff with IT/technical issues related to the equipment operation (audio/video calls), and familiarise staff with IT policies
  • Act as a local security focal point, prepare regular updates to the Business Continuity Plan for the RO and participate in UN Security Plan events.
  • Coordinate with EBRD Publication Desk, ordering published materials and other marketing materials to be distributed locally including processing of import documentation.
  • Implement RO archiving procedures according to Records Management and Archives Unit requirements.

Accounting and Finance

  • Prepare annual budget proposal and mid-year budget for review / discussion with the Head of Office and with the Business Group Senior Budget Officer and provide monthly budget status for the Head of Office’s approval. Monitor the RO budget on a regular basis and do ad-hoc budget status checks for available funds for RO budget purchases.
  • Process and validate expense claims and all other SAP transactions of the RO, including the regular reconciliation of the traveller’s RO Corporate credit cards.
  • Handling of the RO accounts; approving Nostro/cash payments within his/her own limit, executing Bank transfers; handling monthly petty cash reconciliations, while ensuring the necessary segregation of related duties in the RO, reviewing and paying local suppliers’ invoices.
  • Timely reporting to HQ Nostro Control and Requesting funds transfer for RO cost centres from HQ.

Staff Supervision

  • Where designated, ensure effective supervision of the Overtime Eligible Staff and General Services staff including coordination of their workload, keeping track of overtime and providing on-the-job-training.
  • As requested, provide input for annual objectives setting and performance feedback, monitoring of workload and on-the-job training.
  • Champion and role model the Bank’s Behavioural Competencies and Corporate Behaviours, ensuring adherence within the team(s) so that the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct are exhibited at all times.

Administrative support to the Head of RO and/or other Bankers

  • As required, provide overall administrative support to the Head of Office and (if applicable, other Bankers).
  • Drafting official letters and relevant administrative correspondence for review by RO Head.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred, or equivalent experience in relevant areas of expertise
  • Previous local experience in senior administrative/accounting function (including in supervisory capacity) in an international or a leading company is preferable

Associate Banker

Purpose of Job

The Associate Banker contributes to all phases of the project cycle, including project origination, structuring, execution, and implementation and monitoring. The Associate Banker will take responsibility for those tasks assigned to them by the operation leader, which may include undertaking comprehensive due diligence, including financial, market, integrity and EBRD policy compliance, as well as effective post-signing implementation and monitoring. The Associate Banker carries out these tasks as part of a project team under the guidance of an operation leader or under the supervision/guidance of more senior bankers or the team Director.

The Associate Banker role may also include elements of business/pipeline development, client management and policy dialogue.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the operation leader or a more senior banker:

Structuring and Execution

  • Work as a project team member on transactions, contributing to all aspects of project structuring and execution, including working with client counterparts, consultants and other parties to progress the project;
  • Be the primary driver of the scope and quality of project due diligence, including financial, market, integrity and EBRD policy compliance;
  • Prepare internal project documentation, including approval project memoranda,  financial models, draft term sheets,  presentations, etc. as and when required;
  • Take responsibility, as TC operation leader, to design and process technical co-operation assistance, ensuring that TC processing and approval fits with the approval schedule of any related investment project or the related policy dialogue initiative;
  • Ensure that all tasks are completed within the specified time frames to a high standard and in line with the policies, procedures and objectives of the Bank.

Portfolio Monitoring, Value Creation and Reporting

  • Take responsibility for the implementation and monitoring of all projects to which the Associate Banker is assigned, including compliance with project agreements and Bank procedures related to disbursement; monitoring of progress of the project implementation and financial performance of the client; assessing evolving risk factors and monitoring and assessing covenant compliance, in the case of more senior Associate’s they may become the OL for the project once it is in implementation and/or monitoring phase;
  • Prepare timely and comprehensive monitoring reports and include recommendations for corrective actions where required and ensure these proposed corrective actions and recommendations are brought to the attention of more senior team members;
  • As TC operation leader, ensure effective implementation and monitoring of TC assignments to ensure their compliance with donor reporting requirements, operational objectives and that all reports are of a high quality;
  • As a project team member perform all such tasks as may be assigned by the operation leader and provide constructive advice, guidance and supervision to more junior members of the project team.

Business Development

  • Assist, as required, with marketing and business development efforts.
  • The responsibilities of the Associate Banker are designed to allow for the development of transaction expertise and expansion of responsibilities, leading to assuming the role of an operation leader on standard, non-complex transactions. In such cases, the Associate Banker’s accountabilities and responsibilities would be increased to undertake a role of an operation leader under the supervision/guidance of more senior bankers or the Team Director.
