Job Description

Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Medical Officer

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement pre-clinical and clinical research projects and/or supervise assigned components of the work.
  • Provide general diagnosis, care, treatment, and specialized clinical services to study participants.
  • Develop study-related tools, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and training materials; train study staff; conduct medical evaluations for participants meeting criteria for Adverse Events of Special Interest (AESI), and ensure timely reporting of such events.
  • Conduct medical assessments of children experiencing serious adverse events and ensure prompt reporting in accordance with study protocols.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of study design and objectives, and ensure compliance with study protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide expert clinical care and consultation for study participants in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Organize and lead Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions, and facilitate discussions with clinical and nursing teams.
  • Foster collaborative and professional working relationships with non-study staff within health facilities.
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator to address monitoring and audit findings, and implement approved recommendations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Dispensing of investigational products and other concomitant medications;
  • Verifying and maintaining information relating to study participants

  • Custody and storing of drugs;

  • Participate in development of section documents including SOPs
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the clinic team to identify and recruit eligible persons for study participation
  • Identify and support activities aimed at maintaining high retention of study participants
  • Conduct outreach activities in order to engage eligible participants
  • Attend and participate in trainings, team/staff meetings, and other events as needed.
  • Bring to the study teams’ attention any problems, challenges, observed in study activities
  • Any other duties as assigned by study coordinator or principal investigator

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop Independent Development Plans (IDPs) within the first three months, outlining a professional career trajectory and pathway to becoming an independent scientist.
  • Complete three adjunct courses, including One Health Ethics, Implementation Science, and Applied Leadership Skills.
  • Foster mentored research activities and promote South-South cooperation in research training priorities by engaging in high-impact cross-border research partnerships.
  • Establish partnerships with other NIH-funded projects and leverage collaborations with foundation-funded projects.
  • Participate in global scientific platforms such as the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), the Consortium of Universities in Global Health (CUGH), the World One Health Congress, and the Africa CDC annual conferences and workshops.
  • Familiarize yourself with the research activities in the laboratories of the respective co-mentoring principal investigators (PIs) and initiate your mentored research.
  • Attend monthly seminars and quarterly joint meetings to track progress and provide regular updates.
  • Develop a competitive research grant proposal starting from the beginning of your fellowship period and secure both intramural and extramural funding to establish your independent research career.

Vacancy Requirements:

  • PhD in Clinical/Public Health Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Medical Microbiology, Applied Microbiology, Immunology, Public Health/ One Health, Tropical and Infectious Diseases, Molecular Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Data Science, and any other related fields.    Mandatory
  • Research work focusing on the program’s One Health themes including: Endemic and Neglected Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, Zoonotic and other Infectious Diseases, Data Sciences, and have Adjunct Skills and Knowledge.    Mandatory
  • Strong credentials as judged by their publication track records in one or more of the thematic priorities of OHEART.    Mandatory
  • Must have obtained their PhD from one of the partner academic institutions.    Mandatory
  • Must have earned their PhD within the past five years    Mandatory
