Job Description

Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Research Scientist/Study Coordinator – Kisii

Key Responsibilities:

  •  Assist in the implementation of research projects and supervise designated aspects of the project.
  • Training, mentoring, and supervising research assistants and data collectors
  • Ensure proper documentation of research processes
  • Ensure data quality by closely monitoring the trends and completeness of data collected.
  • Provide administrative support for the trial, including scheduling meetings and organizing events.
  • Ensure timely reporting of datasets, field reports, and documents as and when required
  • Ensure that ethical guidelines, research protocols, and other relevant standards are followed throughout the data collection process
  • Ensure adherence to study deliverables time points and support the submission of periodic reports on project status
  • Liaising with relevant county and sub-county health management teams, MOH departmental heads, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders
  • Drafting, editing, and preparing correspondence, reports, and other project-related materials
  • Assist in data analysis, interpretation, and validation of results
  • Assist in proposal and manuscript writing and dissemination of findings

  • Ensure the quality of data collection by monitoring field processes, providing feedback, and verifying data accuracy
  • Ensure that ethical guidelines, research protocols, and other relevant standards are followed throughout the data collection process
  • Support data collectors with logistical matters, including arranging participant interviews and managing resources
  • Address and resolve minor issues that arise during data collection
  • Maintain communication with the principal investigator and study coordinator, and provide regular updates on the project’s progress
  • Maintain detailed records of field activities and collected data.

Community Liaison Officer – Kisii

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a primary point of contact for the community, keeping them informed about project progress, plans, and any relevant updates
  • Help ensure that the project aligns with the community’s needs and expectations, addressing any potential cultural or social sensitivities
  • Map screening locations and mobile community members for screening and follow-up, ensuring smooth coordination between the research team, the screening team, and the hospital staff.
  • Coordinate community eye health outreach programmes, including planning, logistics, stakeholder engagement, and post-event reporting.
  • Conduct health education sessions in communities to raise awareness about the EARN trial
  • Distribute health education materials tailored to local communities to support community mobilization and awareness about the trial.
  • Ensure screening, outreach, and research activities comply with public health guidelines, hospital policies, and donor requirements.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with the County and sub-county health departments, Operations Eyesight Universal, Kisii Eye Hospital, and community health promoters to support outreach efforts and referral networks.

Field Assistants( Data Collection) – Kisii – 10 Posts

Key Responsibilities:

  • Obtain informed consent from participants before they enter the study.
  • Administer the household survey questionnaire and ensure that data is recorded accurately and without bias
  • Adhere to the study protocol, including maintaining ethical standards such as confidentiality, respect for participants, and adherence to regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintain open communication with participants to address any questions or concerns
  • Participate in daily debrief meetings with the supervisor
  • Ensure the safety and responsible handling of all study tools and equipment provided.
  • Promptly communicate any challenges, irregularities, or issues encountered in the field to the research team.
  • Assist the research team in other project-related activities.

Driver – Kisii

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely transporting the research team and study materials to various field sites.
  • Ensure the team arrives on time for scheduled meetings, community engagement, and data collection activities.
  • Perform routine checks on the vehicle, including tyres, brakes, fluid levels, and general mechanical condition.
  • Advise when service is due and deliver the vehicle for service or repairs.
  • Ensure the vehicle is always fueled and keep a record of all fuel refills.
  • Ensure the vehicle is always clean, well-maintained both inside and out, and ready for use.
  • Ensure that vehicle log sheets are filled out every time the vehicles are in use.
  • Report any defects, accidents, violations, or damage
  • Ensure that the vehicle complies with safety standards, is roadworthy, and has the necessary documentation (insurance, registration, etc)
  • Ensure that the vehicle is locked, parked safely in its designated parking slots, and keys returned to the study coordinator at the end of every trip.
  • Maintain regular communication with the study coordinator regarding transportation schedule and requirements.
