Job Description

The current rail network in Kenya is the metre gauge commonly referred to as ‘The Lunatic Line’. It was initially named the ‘Uganda Railway’ after its destination. Its construction began in the Port city of Mombasa in 1896 and was completed in 1901 at the lines terminus in Kisumu. Operations on the line commenced in 1903.

General Manager Rail Operations

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Formulation of strategies for enhancement of rail operations, warehouse operations, last mile services, appropriate evacuation of cargo, and plans to enhance market share or related logistics operations.
  • Development and revision of rail operation Policies, Guidelines, and Work Procedures to adapt to changes in the business environment.
  • Review, initiate, direct and implement the ongoing applications of new technology in train operations management.
  • Provision of technical and professional review for safety of train operations’ efficiency and work methods.
  • Developing, reviewing, and implementing trains and wagon ferries schedules for safe train operations.
  • Managing and coordinating the movement of ferries, locomotives and rolling stock turn round to ensure their availability.
  • Evaluating the performance of the railway transportation and marine services with respect to passenger and freight.

  • Be registered with a relevant professional body where applicable and in good standing.
  • A minimum of twelve (12) years relevant experience, five (5) of which must have been in Senior Management position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing and overseeing the implementation of a dynamic Finance strategy that is able to deliver exemplary services and results as envisioned in the strategic plan.
  • Develop the Corporation’s budget and continuously monitor and evaluate its implementation.
  • Giving oversight to the Corporation’s financial affairs and advising the Corporation on financial planning strategies and policies.
  • Ensuring effective and efficient management of the Corporation’s resources, including finances and assets.

Revenue Assurance & Credit Control Manager

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operations and smooth running of the Revenue Assurance and Credit Control function of the Corporation.
  • Ensure custody, review, and implementation of credit control and debt management policy.

Technical Audit Manager

Duties and responsibilities

  • Determining the objectives and scope of audit and develop overall programme for approval.
  • Supervising and assigning resources to Audit teams and assigning tasks to achieve audit objectives.
  • Executing audit in accordance with Auditing standards.
  • Reviewing Audit reports from Audit teams to ensure quality and achievement of Audit objective.
  • Liaising with Management and auditees in the planning and conducting of audit assignment.
  • Reviewing work papers, evidence and reports of the audit team to ensure that audit conclusions are consistent with the evidence received and well-documented.
  • Coordinating and conducting exit audit meeting/conferences with Management of the audited area to discuss findings, emerging risks and actions to address identified risks.
  • Following up on audit recommendations to confirm the adequacy of implementation of agreed action plan.
  • Identifying, implementing and benchmarking best practices in Internal Audit.
  • Preparing Board Audit Committee papers and minutes, policies and procedures.

Requirements for the job

  • Master’s Degree in any of the following: Business Administration, Finance, Engineering, Information Technology or their equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce (Accounting or Finance option) or other recognized equivalent qualifications.
  • Be in possession of any of the following: – CPA (K), CISA, CFE, CIA or its equivalent.
  • A Minimum of ten (10) year’s relevant work experience, at least five (5) Years’ experience in Senior Management position.
  • Undertaken a management course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
  • Member of a professional body – Institute of Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (ICPAK) and or Institute of Internal Auditors of Kenya (IIA-Kenya).
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Meets the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

Marine Operations Manager

Duties and responsibilities

  • Oversees the implementation of systems and strategies that guarantee reliable, efficient inland waterways Cargo transport services that meet customer satisfaction;
  • Attends stakeholder engagement activities to foster business relationships, enhanced cargo availability and future opportunities;
  • Coordinates provision for ship maintenance equipment to ensure effective, efficient and safe marine operations;
  • Prepares and implements divisional annual budget and the procurement plan;
  • Participates in evaluation of business performance of the marine services;
  • Prepares and presents periodic reports to management;
  • Participates in identifying, reviewing and implementing use of new technology in Marine operations management;
  • Participates in formulation and implementation of the Safety Management Plans (SMP) in Marine operations;
  • Ensures investigations of all accidents/incidents are carried out for the purpose of identifying the root cause and implementing remedial action to stop recurrence;
  • Participates in preparation of proposed tariffs adjustments for marine freight;
  • Define performance management KPIs to monitor operational success against objectives
  • Regularly review the level of operational demand to ensure sufficient staffing levels in the interests of safety and operational efficiency
  • Ensure all planned maintenance, operational and other records are properly maintained
  • Optimize the utilization of vessels, equipment, and personnel to enhance operational efficiency
  • Provide regular updates on operational performance to senior management
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans to address potential crisis or unforeseen events

  • Ensure compliance of Quality Management System in marine section by ensuring operation processes meet the requirements of ISO Standards.

Requirements of the Job

  • Master’s degree in any of the following disciplines: Business Administration, Marketing, Strategic Management, Law, Mechanical Engineering, Maritime Operations or relevant social and physical sciences from a recognized Institution.
  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines: Business Administration, Marketing, Strategic Management, Law, Mechanical Engineering, Maritime Operations or relevant social and physical sciences from a recognized institution.
  • A Minimum of ten (10) year’s relevant work experience in marine related field including cargo handling or port management, at least five (5) Years’ experience in Senior Management position.

Deputy Director – Finance & Corporate Services

Duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible for advising the Institute towards achieving its business strategy on all aspects of management of the Finance, Human Resource and Administration, which include Finance, Human resource management, administration and ICT.
  • Formulating, Implementing and reviewing of policies and strategies on Finance, Administration, HR and ICT
  • Interpreting and implementing the Institute’s administrative policies as formulated by the Board.
  • Implementing the Institute’s Finance, Human resources, Administration and ICT policies, procedures and strategies objectives;
  • Coordinating day to day activities in Finance, Human Resource Administration and ICT
