Job Description

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the world’s environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the environment.

Communications & Knowledge Management Intern

The intern will:

  • Support a wide range of communication and outreach needs and outputs, including drafting briefing notes, speeches, policy briefs, and press releases; and content development, such as video scriptwriting for public service announcements, web stories, website and social media text.
  • Support the development of multimedia communications assets across digital and traditional mediums.
  • Support the dissemination of content through media and networks.
  • Support the implementation of creative campaigns.
  • Analyze social media efforts and create reports on Campaign Activations.
  • Promote networking and building relationships with local organisations, groups or individuals and support and/or participate in local volunteering initiatives.
  • Undertake programme and policy research as directed.
  • Liaise with service providers and creative partners.
  • Support the documentation and dissemination of information, reports and study and assessments
  • Support in organisation and coordination of events, workshops and conferences
  • Other duties to support the work of the Branch as requested.

Qualifications/special skills

  • Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or Have graduated with a university degree. Applicants must be pursuing qualifications in an area of study that can significantly contribute to the responsibilities outlined and overall work of the Marine and Freshwater Branch, including:
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (particularly, proficiency using MS Office Suite);
  • Possess high-level English writing skills;
  • Demonstrate organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrate interest in issues related to ecosystems management, restoration, biodiversity conservation, climate change or sustainable development;
  • Clear ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views;
  • Have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Upon completion of the assignment, it is anticipated that the intern will:
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and has a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter;
  • Have improved communication skills through interaction with UNEP staff, Executive and Senior Management, governments and partner organizations;
  • Have developed significant knowledge on the topic of marine and coastal ecosystems and the work of the Global Fund for Coral Reefs;
  • Have gained a better understanding of UNEP’s operations and the overall United Nations system.

 

Scientific Coordination Specialist

  • Specific tasks and responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Scientific Assessment Branch, Early Warning and Assessments Division, United Nations Environment Programme the consultant will perform the following tasks;
  • Item 1. A project document on thematic assessments
  • Prepare a project concept describing the work on thematic assessments in close consultation with programme officers responsible for various thematic assessments as well as relevant stakeholders.
  • Based on comments received, produce a final version of the concept for submission to the UNEP Concept Approval Group.
  • Solicit inputs and baseline data from relevant stakeholders and sources to help build a project document.
  • Based on the approved concept and gathered materials, develop a project document outlining in detail the project justification, intervention strategy, logical framework, project relevance, implementation arrangements, communication and project sustainability, using the UNEP project document template.
  • Item 2. A concept for a new edition of the Frontiers report
  • Based on the emerging issues selected by UNEP, conduct an online literature research on the topics and gather information from various sources such as online scientific journals, technical reports and UN resolutions.
  • Prepare a concept providing a brief description of each emerging issue including specific aspects and important literature to consider in content development as well as potential authors and reviewers.
  • Item 3. A project plan for the development of the Global Sustainable Tourism Report
  • Based on an existing concept for the development of the Global Sustainable Tourism Report, prepare a project workplan describing how the Global Sustainable Tourism Report is to be developed, methodology to use, report drafting process, potential partners to be involved as well as budget estimates for various project components.

Qualifications/special skills

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in international development, environmental or natural science is required.
  • At least 5 years of work experience in the fields of the environment, sustainable development, natural resources management, and environmental assessments,, as well as some experience in administration and project development, management, monitoring, reporting or other relevant aspects, is required.
  • Experience in project management related to thematic assessments of the environment and climate change is an advantage.
  • Experience in gathering and analyzing information from diverse sources is desirable.
  • Other Skills and experience:
  • Prior experience within the UN and an understanding of the scientific assessment process, or coordinating the preparation of scientific publications and project development, is a distinct advantage.
  • Ability to work effectively and adapt professionally with a multicultural team of international and national personnel and partners is desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners is desirable.

 

GEF-Early Action Support Project Knowledge Management Consultant

  • The consultant will carry out this work by undertaking the following duties:
  • Review existing knowledge management systems and develop a robust framework for internal knowledge management for the UNEP GEF-EAS and the GEF-NBSAP Update and 7th National Report projects to improve access to and use of project knowledge materials and related materials for national implementation of these projects.
  • The framework should include the following components:
  • Landscape mapping – assess and define the scope of the knowledge management role for the GEF-EAS and GEF-NBSAP Update and 7th National Report projects including audience, objectives, and timeframe
  • Needs assessment – conduct a qualitative analysis to identify knowledge gaps and current resources serving knowledge needs for the GEF-EAS and GEF-NBSAP Update and 7th National Report projects by drawing on relevant work by partners, interviews with country project leads, and other relevant information on country needs
  • Monitoring and evaluation – determine how UNEP should track and assess use of knowledge materials produced under the GEF-EAS and GEF-NBSAP Update and 7th National Report projects
  • Workplan – identify activities, timeframes, outputs and outcomes to guide the implementation of knowledge management work under the UNEP GEF-EAS and GEF-NBSAP Update and 7th National Report projects
  • Documenting lessons and best practices – drawing on the knowledge materials and technical services provided to countries and feedback received, identify and document suitable lessons to guide ongoing and future support. This position is located under the Nature Frameworks Support Unit (NFSU) of the Biodiversity and Land Branch, Ecosystems Division, in Nairobi, and reports to Deborah Kahatano, the Chief of NSFU.

Qualifications/special skills

  • An advanced university degree in knowledge management, communications, social, behavioural sciences, international development, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with 2 qualifying years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of 10 years of postgraduate work experience in knowledge management and communications is required.
  • Experience in creating tailored knowledge management strategic frameworks and strategies for projects is required.
  • Experience in developing workplans to guide knowledge management work is required.
  • Experience in creating accessible communications and knowledge products for diverse audiences, including national governments, is desirable.
  • Experience supporting knowledge management for environment- and biodiversity-related projects, as well as national policies and processes, is desirable.
  • Experienced in developing knowledge management strategic frameworks, strategies, approaches and mechanisms, is desirable.
  • Experienced in development of structured workplans for organizations and projects, is desirable. • Excellent communication and writing skills, is desirable.

 

Quality Assurance Officer 

  • Under the overall supervision of the Head of Project Review and Oversight Unit or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the Quality Assurance Officer will be carrying out the following tasks:
  • Undertake reviews of assigned project documents to improve quality of project design to strengthen the results-based approach to achieve concrete programmatic impacts;
  • Identifies potential safeguards risks, provides advice to project managers on appropriate actions;
  • Review projects submitted to the UNEP Project Review Committee for compliance using the Safeguard Risk Identification Form (SRIF);
  • Support in strengthening capacity across the Organization in results-based management, including project quality standards and results-based budgeting to ensure alignment to UNEP’s programmatic priorities;
  • Analyse project development and implementation, review relevant documents and reports, identify problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions;
  • Identify lessons learned from the project review process and project performance;
  • Analyse and present information gathered from diverse sources on quality assurance with innovative and actionable recommendations. The consultant will report to the designated day-to-day focal point appointed by the Head Project Review and Oversight Unit (Policy and Programme Division, UNEP); the latter will set the direction and provide the oversight controls of the assignment.

Qualifications/special skills

  • Advanced university degrees (master’s or above) in Environmental Science, Social Science, Business or Public Administration, Project Management, Results-based Management or a related field is required. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience with programme and project design; project implementation and management; and good knowledge of the UN/UNEP quality assurance, risk and safeguards system(s) and good understanding of UNEP’s project cycle are required.
  • At least 5 years of relevant international experience in environmental, social safeguard systems is required. Demonstrated experience in data analytics (performance trends and patterns) in a development context is desirable
