Clinical Officer – 2 Posts

The Position

The Clinical Officer will report to the Project Coordinator, Accelerating CHIKungunya burden Estimation to inform Vaccine Evaluation (ACHIEVE), be based at Isiolo County Referral Hospital and Merti Sub-County Hospital, and occasionally travel between the two sites. He/she will provide high-quality clinical services in support of participants recruitment, medical screening, diagnosis, treatment, informed consent, and follow-up, while ensuring adherence to the ACHIEVE study protocol, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), ethical standards, and national clinical guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct participant recruitment, screening, enrolment, and follow-up visits in line with the study protocol.
  • Obtain informed consent/assent and ensure participant safety, rights, and confidentiality.
  •  Perform clinical examinations, patient history taking, diagnosis, treatment, and appropriate referrals.
  • Accurately complete Case Report Forms (CRFs), Laboratory Requisition Forms (LRFs), and all other required study documentation within the REDCap electronic data capture system.
  • Prescribe treatment in accordance with Kenyan Ministry of Health (MOH) and study clinical guidelines.
  • Support adverse event monitoring, documentation, and reporting to supervisors.
  • Ensure infection prevention, biosafety, and ethical standards are upheld in all clinical activities.
  • Supervise and mentor study nurses and support the study sites to ensure a safe and efficient environment.
  • Perform any other study-related duties assigned by the supervisors.

Job Sepcifications

Applicants must have:

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
  • Registration and a valid practising license with the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya (COC).
  • Certificate in Computer Applications from a recognised institution.
  • At least three (3) years’ clinical experience in a busy hospital or research setting.
  • Prior experience in infectious disease research projects will be an added advantage.
  • Computer literacy, with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and email applications.
  • Familiarity with REDCap electronic data capture systems is desirable.
  • Knowledge of the local language(s) spoken in Isiolo County will be an added advantage.

Laboratory Technologist – 3 Posts

The Position

The Laboratory Technologists will report to the Project Coordinator, Accelerating CHIKungunya burden Estimation to inform Vaccine Evaluation (ACHIEVE), be based at Isiolo County Referral Hospital and Merti Sub-County Hospital, and occasionally travel between the two sites.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in study-related sample collection, including venipuncture (phlebotomy), and ensure handling, processing, and storage in strict accordance with the study protocol and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Receive, label, register, process, and safely store study biological specimens.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; perform routine quality control checks; and troubleshoot technical malfunctions promptly.
  • Ensure full compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards, biosafety protocols, and biosecurity procedures at all times.
  • Accurately document test results, maintain laboratory records and logs, and ensure timely data entry into the study-approved REDCap electronic data capture database.
  • Actively participate in both external quality assessments (EQA) and internal quality audits to maintain the accuracy and reliability of laboratory procedures.
  • Assist in the training and mentorship of other laboratory staff.
  • Support the study sites to ensure a safe and efficient environment.
  • Support the safe packaging and shipping of samples to reference laboratories in compliance with International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations for the transport of infectious substances.

Job Specification

Applicants must have:

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or other relevant field from a recognised institution.
  • Certificate in Computer Applications from a recognised institution.
  • Registration and a valid practising license with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience at Laboratory Technologist II level or equivalent, with demonstrated competence in diagnostic virology, serology, or molecular biology techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in field-based and BSL-2 laboratory environments.
  • Experience working in donor-funded infectious disease research projects will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to use REDCap for data entry and management will be an added advantage.

Study Nurse – 2 Posts

The position

  • The Study Nurses will report to the Project Coordinator, Accelerating CHIKungunya burden Estimation to inform Vaccine Evaluation (ACHIEVE), be based at Isiolo County Referral Hospital and Merti Sub-County Hospital, and occasionally travel between the two sites.

Duites and Responsibilities

  • Obtain informed consent/assent and ensure participant rights, safety, and confidentiality are safeguarded.
  • Perform study-related nursing procedures, including venipuncture and the handling of biological and maternal samples in line with study protocols.
  • Provide treatment and routine clinical care as instructed by study clinicians, including monitoring vital signs, giving prescribed medications, and follow-up care.
  • Accurately complete Case Report Forms (CRFs), Laboratory Requisition Forms (LRFs), and all other required study documentation within the REDCap electronic data capture system.
  • Ensure compliance with biosafety, infection prevention, and ethical standards in all study-related procedures.
  • Support the study sites to ensure a safe and efficient environment.
  • Maintain accurate study and patient records and generate reports as required.
  • Perform any other study-related duties as may be assigned by supervisors.

Job Specification

Senior Research Fellow (Health Economics)

The Position

The Center for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA) at the University of Nairobi seeks to recruit a Senior Research Fellow (Health Economics) to lead and contribute to the use of economic evidence in health policy and financing decisions. The role involves conducting cost-effectiveness and budget impact analyses of health interventions, supporting national health financing strategies, promoting evidence-based resource allocation, and engaging policymakers to translate research into practice.

The Senior Research Fellow (Health Economics) will be based at CEMA, University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases in Nairobi, Kenya, and will report to the CEMA Co-Directors.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect and organize health financing data to inform economic evaluation of CEMAsupported health interventions and modeling projects
  • Perform preliminary analyses of health expenditure by disease area, population group, and service delivery factors to support cost-effectiveness and budget impact assessments
  • Produce visualizations and summary tables to aid economic modeling and policy engagement
  • Initiate report writing to consolidate findings and inform technical outputs
  • Develop technical guidelines on appropriate health economic evaluation methodologies (e.g., costing, cost-effectiveness analysis, budget impact analysis) tailored to CEMA-supported initiatives
  • Deliver targeted training sessions for CEMA researchers and policy stakeholders on applying economic evidence to health technology assessments and financing reforms
  • Provide strategic input to strengthen CEMA’s health economics research agenda, including alignment with national health financing priorities and global best practices
  • Advise on the integration of economic evaluation approaches across CEMA projects to enhance policy relevance and sustainability

Job Specification

  • PhD in Economics, Health Economics, or a related field, with advanced training at Masters Level or above in health systems, health financing, or health policy.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in health economics, health policy, and health financing.
  • Expertise in health financing analysis, including costing, cost-effectiveness, budget impact, and policy evaluation.
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing economic evaluation methodologies and tools across different levels of the health system.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing multidisciplinary teams and engaging with government, development partners, and implementing agencies particularly in the Kenyan context.
  • Active involvement in national policy processes, including contributions to health strategies and legislation.
  • Strong communication skills, with a record of presenting technical outputs to diverse audiences, including international forums.
  • Excellent writing skills, including experience in developing reports and policy briefs.
  • Strong stakeholder coordination and interpersonal skills.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to align research and technical work with national priorities and global best practices
